HELP!! Cracked brace

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
pm'd and no dice. a chain store near me said they could get one on thurs. I just dont know if it will work given its an older tank. I know the color will be off a little as that is a bit darker than the oak trim. What are your thoughts on that?

as long as the outside glass dimensions are the same, any brace/trim will work. an all glass/aqueon would proboably even work. every "standard" tank ive ever measured has had the same outside dimensions, and the braces are usually fit somewhat loose to allow for silicone between them and the glass.

as far as color goes, order a black one and spray paint the existing one black. it'll match then.

obviously a good idea.

How to go about pulling off the old frame and getting the new one all the way on without breaking glass?

Razor knife the top of the trim all the way around,
to expose the glass.

get a couple of dowels to wrap the piano wire around...

make a tool by twisting the wire on one dowel then feed it through the silicone and twist the second end on the other dowel. then carefully work your way down the trim with a sawing motion.

you'll be able to lift off the old trim...

of course clean off the glass with acetone and a razor blade, before you silicone on the new trim and set the braces...

Now I understand the sawing motion with the wire to go around the trim in between the tank and the glass. but where are you talking about going around with the razor? from the outside edge pointing up or from the inside of the tank?

I took it and cut the top of the trim off down to the top edge of the glass... work it in a shaving motion...use heat if nessasary (hair dryer on the trim)
then you'll have a piece of trim on the inside of the tank and one on the outside of the tank. That's where the wire comes in...

thats really thick to cut with a razor knife but I will try that out when i get the new piece in. if that doesnt work I dont want to have to pry it off and break the glass. that would be another nightmare!

PRY NOTHING!!!:D;)

Don't try to cut it off in one piece, like I said you shave it off in small shavings...bit by bit....seems like alot of work but that top trim is siliconed in place and you'll play hell trying to get the wire in because of the steps in the trim...then it won't saw because of the bends in the wire..

All I did was hit it with a hair dryer and shave it...it takes about 3-4 passes to get to the glass...do about 6" at a time

man im so frustrated by this. i just want to sell the thing now. I just wanted to get a bigger tank for my fish and now i am worse off.
