Help i.d. this cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm getting mixed answers. If you look closely, he does have a little green around his eye and gills. I don't know if that helps at all.

I've kept many cichlids and I do mean many. That fish is instantly recognizable as NOT being any of the other fish.

To give you an idea of what i meant, my first reaction was "lyonsi" but LFS do not carry these fish, and this fish is too elongated, in addition to the eyes being the wrong color.

The finnage, head, eyes, and overall juvenile pattern all point towards the red devil/midas which is a staple at LFS at this size, and they do look like this as they start turning.

I am from Mass - I am very aware of what PetsMarts and PetCo's carry.

Don't get me wrong, the red devil is gorgeous - you don't usually see them this nice. He'll be stunning in a few months. (already is)

So if he is a RD, will he turn red? If so, at what size, b/c all the other RD in his tank were alread red, many of which were much smaller.

It IS a red devil or a red devil/midas cross. Their color is completely unpredictable - and they all change at their own pace. But that is what it is - You just don't know what colors it will be. Have fun with it.

Looks like a Red Barred Midas/RD hybrid. Here's a Red Barred Midas juvie...
