Help! I think I have Bichir Eggs! Not sure what to do! *pics*

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Boy those little buggers sure don't resemble the monsters they become do they? :D

Brines should last awhile since the fry are so tiny.
They will most liklely end up dying before you use them all. Ours always did before we used them all up for the angelfish fry- and so then we had to feed the dead ones to the adult angels...lol.

Ok, there's something I'm doing wrong with the brine and I can't quite figure it out. I've got the airation going, I've added the salt, followed all the directions on the label. I'm not sure what my pH is, but I was told by the fishkeeper at my lfs that Burbank water is higher pH. The brine aren't hatching...and I'm worried for my little fellow. I've served him some chopped up frozen bloodworms, but his little mouth is so small I can't tell if he's eaten any. I know I'm probably being neurotic but this brine shrimp thing is stumping the crap outa me. :nilly:

You know, they should make a hatched baby brine retail store...at this point I'd pay $50/ounce of live baby brines! :)

they have some eggs in limbo in a jar and all you add is water but at this point maybe you should go with frozen?

Also sometimes some batches fail to hatch. What is the temp in the brine hatching container? Gotta be warm. Also is it in a clean jelly jar? That is best.

Trying the frozen brine right now. I just read somewhere that they sell frozen baby brine so I'll be hunting some of that down tomorrow. I'll keep you all updated.

Is your light bright enough that your using to hatch out the brine shrimp? I had to hatch brine shrimp when trying to raise some of my Needlenose Gar fry. They hatched in like a day so it wasn't a big issue. The picture below is the setup I used to hatch mine out. I had a table light fixed on the brine shrimp for about a day and I went to Walmart and got one of those sticky tape thermomaters and stuck it to the side of the 2 liter bottle to make sure that the temperature was consistent the whole time. Other than that it was all good. Water, brine shrimp, light, air hose, tape thermostat and about a day later brine shrimp.

Congrats on the survivors dmhollis!!! i just caught up on this thread....very exciting!

If you run out of tank space and/or you cant get a hold of some tank dividers let me know. i can try to move some fish around (sacrifice my convicts to my armatus) and free up my 10gal if you need it.

either way keep up the good work!! looks like you are doing a great job so far...

any luck with hatching the baby brine yet?

Hey all!!!! Been away all day and was worried about the babies the whole time.

No luck on the baby brine hatching yet. I've got chopped up bloodworms going on right now and they seem to be alright with it, they swim really fast through it. Again, they're still too small to tell if they're eating but, they are considerably bigger than they were when I saw them this morning....so maybe they are liking the bloodworms.

Is there a site or something that will give me the info for building one of those brine hatching devices?

Thanks for the offer B4L. I have my 75g in the setup stage at the moment, in a couple of weeks it'll be ready for me to move the big guys over and that will free up my 10g for the babies who will hopefully be big enough to set loose (with a divider of course:D). So, I think I'm okay for now, but, if I get into a pickle, I'll surely let you know since you're so close!

what you goona do with them as they get bigger got a bigger tank? or sale them? if you gonna sale or get rid of some let me know im down to pick one off you..good luck on the brine and hope u get that going.. other then that looks like u doing a great job..
