I'm not good with these guys but I wonder why nobody thinks it's a G. steindachneri? Just seems like G. pelligrini should have a more yellow base color, vertical lateral bars, and very little blue spangles.

Without collection data or a reputable source on the fish, young geos are a crap shoot to ID. Bro Google pics are the worst to compare against so be careful if you go down that road.. That goes for most species with the exception of the spotted Satanoperca IMO, it's easy to nail down a genus but often times an indevidual species will require a little patience until they put on a little size.

From my research the easiest to tell apart is the males, females being more drab in color/profile for both species. 'Geophagus' pellegrini have a less pronounced nuchal hump, yellow/beige color base, minimal or lacking all together of spotting on the flanks and under even a smallest amount of light the lips will have a blue color to them. 'Geophagus' steindachneri do not have the blueish color on the lips. ;)
