lol since you said that ive spent all my time trying to tell the difference as juveniles and i see none lol

I remember looking it up on this site before and it had something to do with blue spangles. Hope some G. pelligrini owners would chime in.

I'm not good with these guys but I wonder why nobody thinks it's a G. steindachneri? Just seems like G. pelligrini should have a more yellow base color, vertical lateral bars, and very little blue spangles.

I thought that she was a G. Steindachneri when I first saw the picture.. here is one of my female..

Without collection data or a reputable source on the fish, young geos are a crap shoot to ID. Bro Google pics are the worst to compare against so be careful if you go down that road.. That goes for most species with the exception of the spotted Satanoperca IMO, it's easy to nail down a genus but often times an indevidual species will require a little patience until they put on a little size.

From my research the easiest to tell apart is the males, females being more drab in color/profile for both species. 'Geophagus' pellegrini have a less pronounced nuchal hump, yellow/beige color base, minimal or lacking all together of spotting on the flanks and under even a smallest amount of light the lips will have a blue color to them. 'Geophagus' steindachneri do not have the blueish color on the lips. ;)

i see, thankyou for the info! very helpful:D

It's sad I'm taking a picture of a picture (sorry guys :() but it's the only two properly ID'ed pics next to one another I can find at the moment.

'Geophagus' pellegrini below - note the blue coloration on the lips I mention above as well as the lack of blue spotting on the flanks.

'Geophagus' steindachneri below - note the lack of the blue coloration on the lips I mention above as well as the larger nuchal hump.

Yeah that male is a beauty isn't he. I would sincerely doubt the ID from the LFS as true 'G.' pellegrini if they have a very clear Geophagus species being sold as a "jurupari" which is a species from an entirely different genus all together (Satanoperca) not to say impossible, just odds are slim. If you managed to pick them up at $7 a pop you just robbed them lol.

yeah i agree lol but i feel stupid for not even realizing it wasnt jurupari! but im gunna pick up 2 more tomorrow and just grow them out to see what they really are lol, one of the ladys who works there even told me it was a steal if they are Pellegrini!

Don't feel stupid at all! We all have to learn once. I respect people willing to ask. I picked up my first "jurupari" a couple years back and it turned out to be a rare species I've been working on breeding every since. All down hill once you get the bug trust me! Going to get more is a smart choice no matter what the species.

Thanks for the pics Justin! I can definitely see the difference you mentioned.

Speaking of this type of Geo, I saw a G. crassilabris on WS's list. I wonder if it's the real thing ;)

To OP - the second fish is a G. abalios. Not a G. altifrons or G. surinamensis.
