help - indo dats keeping dying off one by one

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put 25 in a seeded 10 gallon bare bottom with some java moss & did not lose a single fish. Sold a few so far in the store. They eat pretty much comes in the tank & all come to the front begging for more. IMO starting these little guys in a smaller tank to start is better then a large tank but depends on how many you actually have? It is easier for them to find the food instead of it getting wasted in larger tanks etc.. These little fishes do not cause a heavy bio load. Use a air line with a 3/16" rigid tube to vac waste from the bottom about every other day & top off. I did add a bit of salt to tank on arrival. Temp is about 82-84.
I have one in the hatchery that was born without a little fin in a ten seeded sponge filter, bare bottom & temp maybe 79 degrees & doing great.
AS they grow move them up to larger tanks. I also recommend using Bio chem zorb media for clear better water for all your fishes.

Why is everyone keeping their dats in such small tanks? If you're going to purchase that many please be reasonable and select a proper size tank...not to mention what you'll need in the future to properly house these fish. It's kind of stupid if you ask me.

Because these dats are still tiny, and those small tanks are grow-out tanks. Obviously, you have not seen the dats or know what are you talking about.

so far they are doing good with fishncash idea, but i didnt put any coppersafe since they are not safe with plants in there. i got a big driftwood with little holes for their hide out, bout 4 anubias 1 amazon swords 3 pvc piping cut to about 3 - 5 inches.

water test on it was fine, all i wonder is since a 12 gallon is so small is it possible for it to go in a mini cycle when doing water change, if so should i have little bags of ceramic rings in the tank just to keep bacteria efficient enough for the tank not to go into a mini cycle. i housed many fish in the 12 gallon and didnt lose a fish until these indo's came. i had 10 pbass in the same tank before. then i had 4 ntts with 11 loaches before.
I have no idea if your is going thru a mini cycle but I had the same problem with keeping discus in a 125g tank. I kept loosing discus until I added some live plants. I wonder if there is a relation between discus with live plants. If you really pay attention, most of the nice discus or angelfish fish community tank are the heavily planted tank. Congrats for keeping the fish alive and glad it worked out for you.

i have , ,,,, i think 12 dats in my tank , i have 2 eheim 2080's filtering 1000 litres ,water re enters the tank from above the surface via 2 spray bars, temperature is 24 degree C all the time ,no pebbles, just an area of sand, my fish have gone from 1 inch to upto 9 inch the biggest ,i have not lost any yet but will let you all know if i do,i add prime once a month and that may be my lucky secret ???? other than that its just been a normal fishtank routine

i have quite a few.. going to keep the widebar wannabes, the perfect 4 bars, and two symmetrical split bar ones. I haven't lost one yet.. I'm actually keeping my water at 80* They are growing quite nicely. I'll be selling the non-keepers when they grow just a little bit more.

I seriously think its the tank size, and temp.. mine are already very territorial for their driftwood spots.

Best of luck~

Thanks FishNCash. yea i notice that discuss and angelfish live good in a planted aquarium.

Tom (cichlidsrool) the guy who i picked up my indos from told me his vendor told him driftwood and plants and you wont lose a fish again.

Yea...never kept discus with live plants and my discus have been thriving for years. I do keep driftwood in the tank though.
