Help me build my 540 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Plumbed the reeflo and rubbermaid sump ( did not glue yet) and test my overflow using slightly modified herbie method. The overlfow is near silent. uses 2 x 1.5 in returns to sump ( one is almost wide open the other almost closed), there is a 1in emergency overflow. The return from the reeflo is also within the overflow box using 1.5in pipe /check valve then reduce to a 1in bulkhead at the top- this will go to modified spray bar. I have four 7x16in 200 micron filter socks in the sump. Most of the noise is from the return pipes in the sumps.

I see you're using a small piece(s) of foam. I'm using a few 2x2 foam flooring tiles (they're soft) to reduce/negate vibrations, but that's only if you were looking for something a little more permanent. Looking great, nice progress!

Thanks for all of you help Clay, The herbie (siphon) minmized all noise from the overflow but I cant beleive how much noise is coming from the plumbing and sump!

I used schedule 20 PVC for some of the plumbing I am going to redo w schedule 40 PVC I dont if it will make any difference.

I cant fit 2in foam- everything is so tight and I am afraid if increase the hieght of the reeflo( higher than hole drilled in sump) it will create micro bubbles. I may put some left over foam on the inside doors and side to reduce noise. I have some very thin faom sheet from a flooring project I am going to try and slide under the sump. Maybe I will look for some softer 1in faom for under the reeflo and some foam pipe covering in effort to reduce the noise? I also may reducing the four 1.5in returns at the filter bags with 1in with bushings and titrate both siphons to be open halfway Vs one wide open and 1 nearly closed- will have to play with it.

My internal overflow box has a small leak at the base so I am fixing that now. Glue plumbing, buff 1 more time, paint back black, enclose back of stand and goal set up sunday.

This shouldn't be the case if you were running a Herbie setup. Like I mentioned earlier, I've seen a 600g with 3" Herbie pipes and a TON of flow. This was in a living room, and you could not here so much as a trickle.

I watched the video and can't really see all that is going on, but it appears you have your filter socks and drain lines above water. Having them above water will create a lot of noise. Also, do you have valves on the main drain lines, to create a full siphon?

There is no noise from the overflow box- the herbie is awesome. There are valves on both main drains creating a siphon. my socks are not submerged- they empty to drip plate , drain through bio balls then into the bottom of the sump.

I ran it dry some of the noise is vibration from the plumbing echoing in the sump.
