i belive it is New Ulm, MN...that seems to stick out...i know that i get alot out of the st. crouix

Whoever said Chicken liver gets a "W". Got there this afternoon and tossed my line in and let it sit in a back pool. I left the bail open just in case. I was putting the liver away and turned around and saw line burning off the spool! I picked it up and set the hook hard, and felt the hook pull out of the fish.... Aaaaaaaaaah! Even though that was frustrating, it was encouraging at the same time. Good amount of action within the first 30 seconds of being there.

I only caught 2 catfish, and uhhh something. Drum? Not exactly sure, but mostly I contribute that to my poor 'hooking' of the chicken liver. It just falls right off, so I wasn't able to set into most of the fish that were biting. Any pointers here? Tips or tricks?

I also lost a real good fish tonight. My line got hung up on something in the river while I was fighting it, and the line snapped.... 30lb braid.... just snapped... Damn... Rest assured I will be back at it. Had a blast. :D

If the river is not fished alot you can try some sunfish heads, its what their used to feeding on so you will get the attention of the bigger cats. If your deadset on using liver try putting it on the hook and take some sewing thread and wrap it to the hook but not too tight so u dont squeeze all the good stuff out.

I don't know if I can. I know in MN its illegal to use gamefish as any type of bait. I'll have to look up ND's regulations on that. Do you just go out and catch your own?

Yeah, I'm gonna have to do something about the liver. I lost quite a bit of it just casting, and 'fed' a lot of the fish in that river, lol.

Thanks for the ID man.

Yo buddy, go with the chicken livers. I'm serious they work awesome. Go to your supermarket and pick up a huge tub that should cost you about a dollar fifty. They are nasty as hell but if you hook them up using a treble hook you should be able to get them to stay on for a cast. Treble hook, weight it to the bottom, then just booger fish. Keep the line tight, smoke two cigarettes pick your nose for a bit and drink a beer. By that time a catfish should be munching away on those salmonella covered nasties on the end your line. Watch out for the peck fins and dorsal, they are sharp. Don't forget to take a picture. Also don't leave the line down too long or they start to eat the whole treble. Once it gets down far enough it's too hard to get out at night. Oh yeah, go at night. Good luck, even though you won't need it. If there are catfish within striking distance, you will catch them.

if u dont want to use a treble hook the liver should have 2 lobes and in the middle is a piece of fat. if u cut that in half and split it between the 2 pieces and start the hook in there and run the hook as many times in n out of it that should work. also dont cast it as if u r tryin to hit a homer cause the liver is real soft but give it enough force to get out but not enough to rip it off.just try messin with it till u find what works for u on it and good luck.

also put it in the freezer to harden it up a lil not completely frozen but hard spots to help the hook stay.

Coldwater catfish hunt mainly be smell, so a nice, juicy, bloody, stinky bait will do you good. Although I've heard of cats being caught on lures, i haven't had any luck with them.

you could also try using a small piece of spunge attatched to a single or trebble hook. This will be rather boyant, so you'll need some weights, but after soaking the spunge in some smelly bait liquid (whatever's left over in the bottom of a jar of salmon eggs, or meat juices (fat or blood)). This works well, because, unlike bait fish, the spunge collapses as soon as the fish grabs it, allowing the hook to dig in on the very first strike.

best of luck.

glad to here the liver worked out...i always let some liver dry out on shore while i am waiting for a bite...it seems to hold better after a slight dry out...also if you get a small bite i allways check for bait...also use "j" style hooks
