if ur planning on getting rid of all ur current filtration, u might have to spend a little more then u would like ($150). however, u can always try to find what ur looking for on craigslist or in the classified. a 90 with a single Oscar wont be too bad, anymore Oscars or fish that produce that type of mess would require way more then ur set budget would allow. keep this in mind if u plan on getting more O or other messy eaters. the Eheim pro series or a FX 5 or Fluval 405 would be ur best bet IMO. another option would be to buy two small canister filters; i would recommend 2 Eheim 2213 or 2215, again depending on how much u wanna spend.

i didnt mention the 2217 because its a more powerful and more expansive canister filter compared to the the 2213 and 2215 . i was suggesting 2 small ones as another option.
Too bad you don`t feel comfortable increasing your water level, it`s going to cost you $$$.

If you're looking for a cheap canister filter, the Marine land ones are not bad on a budget. They are a little louder and the setup is tougher but they do the trick.

XP3!...Save up a little more and pack it full of bio.. I have a xp3 and a magnum 350 on my 90 and both are very quiet. You will need a second xp3 later on with the "O's" in there. good luck.
