help me pick out a shark..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Liveaquaria is CRAP for info. Wrong names, wrong sizes, wrong comparisons.

Example:
http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+41+1523&pcatid=1523

Marbled bamboo cat shark = wrong name. Says bamboo sharks are also known as catsharks - wrong. Catsharks have very different jaws/teeth than bamboos. They aren't even close to the same. Says shark in pic is also known as white spotted bamboo. Animal in pic is actually a coral catshark - not one of the two wrong speices listed. (I've bred them, and know them well.) 180 gallons for a white spotted bamboo shark will never do - which is what they are claiming to sell. 180 gallons for the shark in the pic will be bare minimum. They have a 24" shark blended with one that can get 4 feet long!!!
The question becomes what are they really selling you? The shark in the pic, or one of the two names they blended together? There is a BIG differnece in species and cost.
With that much wrong info on the website (and I just used one of many animals they sell), why on Earth would you trust them by sending your hard earned money to them for something as high end as a shark?

That's why I hate common names. The picture is clearly Atelomycterus marmoratus (coral cat shark, like you said) while C. plagiosum is a white spotted bamboo. As far as I'm concerned neither belong in a 180; coral cats are just too active to be kept in small aquariums; for my money there's nothing better than an eppie. They do get fairly large but they're naturally suited to tight spaces.

I've called LA out a couple times on misidentifications, but I have to say, for rare stuff and customer service they are bar none. I bought a $1300 eel from them last year and it arrived stressed (FedEx's fault) and wound up dying two days later. They refunded the entire amount without even seeing a picture of the body.

Always wanted sharks, but went morays lol
You should get sharks next time you upgrade. Just leave the triggers/puffers in the 12 ftr. I've never, ever had any issue with sharks/moderate to peaceful morays. Groupers seem to be fine as well, though I've only ever cared for two.

Yeah, the customer service is top notch at Live Aquaria. I'd agree with Zoodiver about more exotic animals, but for more standard fare, I think LA is about as good as you're going to get online, or even at most LFS.
