Good to know! A friend in town said he had to clean his socks (7x16's) every 2 days, which seemed excessive. I plan on stocking with cichla, dats, maybe coupe cats like a tig or tsn. How many do you think I will need with a fairly heavily stocked tank and only have to clean them once a week?

my socks are 7 x 16 and i had the 100/50 combo. Had to clean it every couple days or so.

Helpful info on globe and gate valves. So far, my gate valves are working out well. I still believe the Poret to be a good alternative to socks, no it won't filter to 1 micron but the maintenance should be considerably less and you pick up a little bio filtration.

I appreciate the info on the Poret foam Charlie. I'm pretty set on using socks, but had already been kicking the idea around of adding foam in tandem with socks. Seems like a good product, and a little extra filtration and bio never hurt anything!

I ended up finding a local speciality plumbing store that carried brass gate valves in 1.5" size, so I added one to my setup this weekend. Now I can fine tune it just like my 57g, which is great!

Alright, this project had been put on hold for a bit due to a new baby boy and Uncle Sam kicking me square in the sack in April, but it's back on now. I intend to plumb the returns with 1" pipe per Jose's suggestion, but I'm stuck on the drain lines. I don't think I can do a 2" BeanAnimal due to the fact that I have limited room in the overflow (14 5/8"x4 5/8"), and I don't have the space in the room I am putting this tank to have 2" plumbing behind the tank. So, with the flow I have I was planning on doing a 2" Herbie system inside the overflow box. Yeah? Or would I have room/capacity to do the BeanAnimal at 1.5" inside the overflow box? How would YOU plumb the drains? Thanks

Kevin

With those two pumps you'll have about 4000gph (not counting head loss). I have a feeling that a 1.5" Beananimal system will handle that just fine. Or if that makes you nervous, a 2" Herbie will be good too. All else equal, the Herbie and Beananimal should flow the same amounts with the same diameter piping. The only real difference is the 3rd emergency line on the Beananimal.

My 400g ran a 3400gph pump on a single 1.5" drain line (regular drain, no Herbie or Beananimal), and it handled the flow just fine (pics of the setup in my sig). Also, on my current setup, I have 2000gph going through my 190g on a 1.5" Herbie system. When I take apart the main line that has the brass gate valve on it, I can look inside the valve and see that it's about 90% closed off. There is seriously a tiny opening. And that tiny opening is handling all that flow. I'm confident my 1.5" system can handle a lot more than 2000gph.

Hope that helps.

Let me know how you end up doing this I have the same question. with my system. I am looking for the same speed.

Yeah bro, that definitely helps. I was curious about flow rates with a true siphon from a Herbie or BeanAnimal as compared to flow rates from "regular" flow. Most charts show a single 1.5" pipe to have a 2100 gph capacity with "Gravity to low pressure" (I'm figureing I will have about 3300-3400 gph with head loss). But a siphon is so much more efficient I figured it has to have more capacity. I think you've just given me proof of that. I'm just wary of running 2" lines man, that stuff is HUGE. Not to mention pricey. But (3) 1.5" lines would cost as much or more when you factor in valves, etc. Decisions bro.

Is your BeanAnimal setup noticably quieter than your old Herbie? I could fit a 1.5" BeanAnimal in that overflow couldn't I?

Thanks Jose!
