Help me with an update on the monster catfish sticky!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That one looks darn near identical to mine, duckface and all! Lol

That is one trait of metaense that other Pseudoplatystoma do not have. So I am thinking that ID of metaense could be as simple as that, but besides the morphological characteristics the pattern matches also. If you'd like I can forward your pics to Dr. John Lundberg for proof positive ID, but I would definitely not think it's any of the other 7 species.

Also any info you can provide on the husbandry of this fish will be very helpful to MFKrs of the future. Keep an eye on his behaviors, eating habits, growth rate, ect.

I would love it if you were able to submit the pics for a positive ID (if it's not too much trouble).

No trouble at all. I'm sure Dr. Lundberg will let us know for certain which species it is. i think he has a small argument with the current classification of pseudoplatystoma if I remember correctly. :) I'm going to reread the document that puts it at the current 8 species.

I thought there was no agreement which Pseudoplatystoma revision was right, if any of the two - the one that recognized 4 species or the one that did 8.

I have not heard of there being any argument of how many species. I was under the impression that the one that split it into 8 species was the accepted one. Look here also at a potential 9th, unsure weather or not it has been accepted. http://www.ibcperu.org/doc/isis/7162.pdf I think that pseudoplatystoma need DNA analysis to confirm species count. I'm sure Dr. Lundberg is probably all over that already lol. I'll go ask.

Well I only have one cat for now but any pictures I post are certainly yours for use on the site. You don't need to ask, just grab them and let me know! I'll help in any way that I can. :)
