Swimming in a mountain river
I've had this tiger oscar for a few months now, no problems. She was growing fast and doing great. Recently I think she's been burning herself on my heater. Its a marineland plastic heater, it's black... Anyways, around 3 days ago, I noticed something weird on her, i went looking for diseases, or something like that, but they don't look like anything. She now has marks all over her, I feel so bad! Poor girl is gonna be all scared up! I would think she'd move if it got too hot, but apparently not. I just took out the heater, to see if that is indeed what it is, and hopefully heal. Now that there are bigger injuries, they definatly look like burns. What do i need to do to help her? She's active, and eats the same. She's always been kinda wobbly(swims great), but i think she had a head injury early on or something, or maybe its just her being weird. Her tankmates are 3 turtles, a pleco, and 3 crayfish. I did a 20% water change today, and was thinking I'll do that every other day or so. Should i give her medicine or something? I can get a bigger net and put her in an extra tank I have, a medical tank I guess. But I want my first tiger oscar to grow up big! PLEASE HELP ME!!! Do I need medicines, what does she need!!!:cry::cry::cry::cry::(:(:(:(

Can't help you without pictures. Removing the heater (if you don't have another heat source) is obviously going to make your water cold and that's generally not a good thing for tropical fish...

ah...first off i would say dont keep your fish with turtles..they are dirty dirty dirty ....how size tank are they in?.

I would suggest removing her to a hospital tank....i dont have Os so someone will have to chime in on how to help her:(

As long as the tankmates get along and you have healthy water, cool, but as far as the heater goes get a cover. They make plastic type protectors for heaters, and this is usually recommended for oscars.

I'm skeptical that this is actually from the heater. I have an old marineland stealth (one of the non recalled ones) that I have used for years and it never has gotten warm enough to cause burns. Have actually ever seen her hit the heater and then leave the mark? Oscars are very susceptible to lateral line disease or other bacteria ailments if the nitrates are very high and if you are keeping her with really messy turtles you are going to need one huge tank with massive amounts of filtration to keep nitrates in check. Have you done any water tests for ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate?

I'd blame mystery injuries on the turtle myself...if you're worried, get a piece of pvc pipe and drill a bunch of big holes in it. Voila, unbreakable heater guard!

If it is indeed from the heater you need to block off the heater. The one major down sides of a heater is that fish can burn themselves on the heater. If you have sump on your tank you can put it in the sump or if not you just have to find a way to block her off from getting to the heater.

Jgjoneslaw has a great suggestion!! The only fish I have ever seen get burns from a heater is a stingray but what you can do, just in case it is the heater, is get a piece of PVC pipe and drill some big holes in it and put the heater inside the pipe. Good luck. I would post some picts if you can get some.
