HELP MY OSCAR IS BURNING HERSELF TO DEATH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tank is 240Gal I believe. I have a Fluval FX5, w/ ammonia remover, carbon, bio-max, and ceramic rings to take out all the big chunks of stuff, I clean the filter out around once a month, maybe two, I also have a water circulator, and there is a slight current through the entire tank. I do a total water change around once a month. I have not actually SEEN her touch it, but she sleeps by the heater, in a cave. Temp is 80, and I'm waiting for a water testing kit, will be here tomorrow. I didn't think my heater got too hot eather, but it gets freaking hot. I felt it, and it started hurting after like 15 sec. When I clean out the tank, i have a syphon thingy, and suck up the yuck from the gravel. And when i put in new water, I put "Top Fin water conditioner" in. Sry the pics suck. She wanted to know what I was doing and I had to snap quickly! The marks defiantly look like burns. Everyone gets along great, she follows my turtles around and hangs out w/ them all day. They don't hunt her or anything. My turtles are particularly inept hunters, she's a fast little thing, so they gave up after an hr or two the first day.

I'd blame the turtle looking at those pics...

Trust me, it's not the turtles;). They can't even catch goldfish unless they're really sick or stuck somewhere. Could the crayfish be picking at her at night?

+1 on this. also, might not hurt to add a little more filtration to this tank considering if it is a 240 and having all these fish and turtles.

Turtles often do it at night when the fish are sleeping. But if it's not, could be something else is picking on it.

i would suggest bumping your water changes up to about 30-40% weekly..rather than once a month based on your stock ..Turtles are dirty little (or not so little) things...but yes i would blame water quality and the turtles on these injuries

The reason why i'm confidant its not the turtles is that if it was indeed a bite, it doesn't match the size of any of them. The bite is too small for the 2 adults, and too big to be the juvenile. Do plecos munch on oscars? The ring wound is around his mouth size. He would've had to do it twice, but both are right over her underfins?. Maybe he wanted to munch on those? Then crays for other injuries? I'm just kinda stabbing things out there. If its an attack of somekind, then it's between the crays and pleco. From my observations the oscar and pleco seem to get along though.

your for sure its heater burns....
well you say your using a marineland heater........ is it the one on RECALL marineland stealth pro all black with red dial?
