HELP MY OSCAR IS BURNING HERSELF TO DEATH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm glad you're so dedicated. A lot of people have different preferences ... I would just fill with a type of bio media as a second filter ... And I would take the suggestion to move a good filter on to the hospital tank asap.

Seachem matrix is probably the best bang for the buck for biological media. Don't do carbon because that will filter out the medication you're putting into the tank.

also recommending filter floss for bacteria culture, and don't use carbon like previous post suggest because it will filter out medication.

Purchased some of seachem bio stuff. Gonna fill my new fx5 w/ that stuff and add some to the hospital tank filter. Hopefully that'll help. The melafix bottle says don't change the water, but a few people have said change the water, kinda confused

Adding it to the hospital tsnk won't work. If you can add some from your filters that have been running a while on the old tank that would be good. Keep an eye on the ammonia levels on your main tank. The wounds look like ammonia burns to me but I could be wrong. As far as the hospital tank, if your not going to add an established filter to it you might have to do large water changes everyday to keep the ammonia and nitrites to a minimium. Hope your oscar gets better

Personally, at this point, I would not be too concerned with dosing the tank. You need to be concerned with keeping your water very clean. 1 oscar in a 30 gallon will produce lots of waste.
You should be doing daily water changes and also test the water parameters everyday because your tank is not cycled.
Your parameters need to be 0-ammonia 0-nitrite and under 20-nitrate. At this point I would not worry too much about the ph level-as long as it is consistant.
Do daily water changes to keep that water clean clean clean.
Clean, cycled water is the number 1 step to healing your fish.
Good luck.

+1 to everything Milpool said. Get that hospital tank cycled, preferably by moving over one of your established filters, and get ready to do 2 or 3x weekly large water changes to keep the ammonia nitrite at 0, and nitrate less than 20, prefer less than 10 while healing. Remember, an Oscar needs 55 gallons minimum so healing in the 30 gallon is going to be tough unless you keep up with those water changes. Once the tank is cycled and your parameters are in check you should start seeing improvement without adding any medicine to the tank at all.

And how long will it take to have the filter "cycled". In my main filter, I have bio-max and a carbon ammonia remover. Both of which idt will assist me. Other than that, I have a sponge from a similar filter. If new media won't help the oscar, then I can't help her other than do water changes every other day. I will do one today.

Carbon doesn't remove ammonia...

Are you talking about "ammo chips"? If you are, they need to be taken out and reactivated or just replaced, as they WILL leach ammonia back into the water once they have what they should.

In all, prime and water changes is your biggest factors for cycling.

No. I know that:). Sry didn't make it clear it was 2 separate things. Its a fluval product that mixes their ammonia remover and their carbon stuff. Been using it in my big tank for awhile now. It's called Zero-Carb. Replaced it like 2 months ago.
