help on choosing fish 55g

My advice first off ignore myklein2 they either think they are funny or have no idea what they are talking about; either way not info you want. Some of the cichlid species some of the other people are telling you would probably be your best choice in case the 125gallon gets delayed by a lot of time or just can't happen.

What about the crystal eyed cat that deep blue suggested? too big for a 55g? will it outgrow a 125g and how active are they? i have tried to search the forum but not alot of info on these guys. ive just tried to find how fast they grow and how active they are but no luck.

Do a search on oddballs that will fit your need in a 125. Cool stuff out there.

they would fit in the 125.

First, if you are having a lot of trouble finding info on any fish (ie crystal eyed cat) there's a reason. Things that aren't commonly kept are not commonly kept for a reason. There have been some great suggestions as far as cichlids go. If you are liking the bichir idea, I would suggest your common senegalus. They are pretty easy to find, affordable, get good sized and I don't know of any major behavioral differences between it and other bichirs.
