HELP! Only breathing through one gill

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dimlin is used to treat anchor worms. I believe it breaks down their outer layer so they die. Not sure if it is helpful with other parasites though

Hi. I'm new to this forum and stingrays (not a newbie with fishes). I decided to renew this thread, because I have the same problem with one of my 2 Motoros. yersterday I noticed that of them, male, about 25 cm in size, when lying in the sand, is breathing through one spiracle. Also the same side of a fish (as the shut spiracle) on top is not making breathing moves, is not inflated. Still the ray is feeding (about 3-5 earthworms per feeding time/ 3 x day), and during feeding time the closed spiracle starts opening again, but maybe a little less then the one, that is O.K. Also when feeding or moving, both upper sides are making breathing moves.
My Ph-7,5, NO2-0. No3-5, NH3-0, Gh15, Kh-12. Constant air supply, filters cycled a 1,5 year ago.

1. How often do you do water changes? automatic water changes,

2. What percentage do you change? 25-30 percent a day

3. What size is your tank? 550 liters (145 gal)

4. What is your stock? one 25cm Motoro, one 20 cm Motoro, one 25 cm Silver Aro, two 15 cm Datnoids

5. What is your filtration? 2 external filters

6. What do you feed your rays? live bloodworms, earthworms.

7. How often do you feed your rays? 3x per day

8. How long have you maintained this schedule? I only have rays for 6 days

9. Barebottom or Sand? very fine sand (maybe it's a problem)

10. Eating? Yes, but don't know if enough.

11. Did you add salt for treatment? No.

12. What other meds did you use? None.

13. Did you transfer the sick ray? No.

14. What other info do you think might be helpful? The ray was aclimatized using drip, after introducing to tank, both started eating after 3 hours.

15. Where was your ray from? Vendor? CB? Wild Caught? Approximetely a month ago they came from somewhere in Asia to Poland, then two weeks in Poland, ant last week in Lithuania.

Sorry for my English, any help would be very appreciated. Should I wait ? Dactylogyridea?

Your English is perfectly fine :)

The sand shouldn't be a problem

It could possibly be gill flukes you may want to pick up some Prazi-pro. It is supposed to be a very gentle medicine that will not affect your filter. Some people do say that it is hard on the rays though so you may want to wait until someone else with experience with gill flukes or using prazi can give further advice

Sorry I can't be more help :(

I would treat using prazitranquel, there is different names for the actual product in different countrys.
I have talked with lots of people and have found that it is VERY safe.
