HELP! POLYS SICK!!??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
agree with richierichdollar, a cycled tank should have nitrate reading, ammonia and nitrite should be 0.
of you already have nitrates , 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites
btw whats your filtration? and how many fish do you have in your 125 Gal?
the whitish stuff i think could be due to the fish shedding slime because of high ammonia.

I swear on my life, ammonia is yellow (with the slightest hint of green but not then next color), nitrites light blue and nitrates yellow (with slight hint of orange but also not next color). My temp was at 80 when this started and has been at 82 since. Are u being a d*** or trying to help? have u even read the whole thread?

I am trying to help but your readings are unusual or u just have great filters on your tanks. If u know for sure its a fungas then treat with fungal meds. If u dont know then dont treat with anything but 50% water changes and salt. Poly's are strong and bounce back off of almost anything with frequent water changes and a little salt. You may need a new test kit. Also get rid of that water conditioner that is old, clean the filter(with tank water) incase its still in the filters.

looks like ammonia burn

I have a eheim 2217 and a 2215. 159 and 93 gallon rated. So yes, i have more than enough filtration. I hope it is in fact ammonia burn.... But the pics i posted are from the 40 breeder with no high anything. Fungus meds have not worked. day 4 of meds. The melafix killed my clown from the 125 that i separated in a 10 gallon...

the fish from the 40 Gallons, are they originally from the 125 gallon?
The fungus might be caused by injuries sustained by the fish from ammonia burn.

no. the fish from the 40 were never in 125. 125 had the nitrite and nitrate spike. 40 seems to have this fungus. but ur saying it looks like ammonia burn. which is credible since the 2 ropefish seem to have shed their slime coats before they died..
btw for your filtration, even if they're rated for bigger tanks, There's a possibility that the media it contains might not be able to support your bio load, as the rating is only flowrate and not the actual bio media whicn can handle the load?

I see. I have eheim porous "balls" in both about 1/4 full (3") and eheim ceramic "macaroni" looking pieces about 1 1/2" deep,a blue sponge and a white fine sponge. one filter has carbon and the other ammo chips. Perhas it was not cycled properly or i was overfeeding (tryng to feed by bichirs while clown knife (rip) and pike cichlid (back to lfs) and marbled achara cat ate all the food). 125 seems to be under control and i assume the cloudy eyes will fade if i keep my eyes on ammonia and nitrites.

The 40 breeder with fungus shows little improvement, so i will do meds for 5th and final day tomorrow then change 25% water and see what happens...

Ps, i have 6 LARGE mossballs in 125 and many floating plants( look like large duckweed, lily pad like almost) in 40 breeder.

Ammo chips can cause a filter die off. It starves all the bacteria, then expires, then you have no biofilter left.
In order to have 0 nitrates, you'd have to be heavily planted. I have to add nitrates to my tanks, but they are jungles. Without that, you have to have nitrates. I'd bring a sample into the LFS and get them to test to make sure your tests aren't expired.

Tested today again and 125 is: ph 7.0ish. nitates about 2.5 (maybe i never noticed since its btw 0 and 5.0 or maybe my tank finally cycled, either way their is a reeding on nitrates, didnt know i was suppose to see one so thanks :0) ) nitrites 0ppm and ammonia 0. Have cut down on feeding since clown knife isnt around to ingest all the food.

I have ceramic eheim filter media and eheim porous balls(forgot appropriate name) in both filters as well as white fine pads and blue corse pads , above the bio media but below white pads one filter has carbon in a bag and the other filter has ammonia in a bag. JAMESF, your suggesting that I remove ammo chips all together? If so will I be in danger of having ammonia spike? How will i keep ammonia down? Please enlighten me. thanks.
