hi i need some puffer experts out there to help me on this one. i have 2 1.5 inch puffers (a GSP and a Black Saddled Toby) in a 20L full marine with a with a whisper 20 power filter, a fission nano protein skimmer and a powerhead with a prefilter on it. my GSP seems to have 2 raw spots on his head, one on top and one on top to the side... like where the skin has been worn away and white flesh is showing. ive been giving them vitamin c suppliments for 2 weeks now and just gave them a half dose of melafix. nitrate is 0 nitrite is 0 hardness is about 250 ppm alkalinity is 300 ppm? is that supposed to be that high? and the ph is 8.3 ish. ammonia is about 0.15 ppm. the specific gravity is 1.020. i do weekly 25% water changes and he has been healthy up to now. i did just go to a wedding in St. Louis for 3 days and the Black Saddled Toby is fine. ill try to get a picture up soon. thanks

i think one thing that is going to help you big time is a much much larger tank. Puffers are large dirty fish and require space, about 100-125gallons worth minimum. More if possible. Its possible that the two of them are fighting in such close quarters which is causing the "raw spots" on the GSP.

ive never seen them fight before. and they dont during the night cuz if i walk down there when the lights are off they are both asleep... isnt there a disease called like hole in the head or something?

Hole in the head is a freshwater disease common in south american cichlids. To my knowledge it doesnt have anything to do with salt water, although I might be wrong. Also its a actual hole not just rubbed off flesh. I highly doubt this is what your puffers have.

:DSomeone correct me if Im wrong:D

yeah i think ur right and no its just like rubbed off skin but now theres 3 and hes eating less... could it be from malnutrition?

HLLE does happen in saltwater species as well. Most common in angels, groupers and tangs. But its possible to the chemical stability in your tank is way off that its causing ammonia burns. This will eventually kill the fish. I would start doing 25% water changes daily until signs regress and then start planning a larger system for them

i won a 140 gallon in a bet :headbang2 but my dad is not willing to follow thru on that... he will have too soon cuz ill start charging interest (as adviced by my mom) for things like decor and other fish stuff. and ill do a water change right now.

ok first off i know this is in the wrong place... but if it was in saltwater it would not get any results so plz mods just let this one slide for now in dedication of a sick GSP.

ok... i have a GSP with like rubbed off skin possibly from ammonia burns or malnutrition because i think his teeth have grown out too far. how do i grind his teeth down? he cant eat food very well and all he does is sit there on the bottom with his fins flopped to one side and a sad face looking at me like "how could u do this to me?" its really depressing and my parents dont understand because they hate my fish... the ammonia is at .25 ppm and i just did a 25% water change. plz help me! do it for PUFF!

and heres a link to my week old post that didnt get many replies:

read that for more info on my puffer's condition. thanks

why is there ammonia? is your tank cycled yet?
how fast did you switch them to full marine?

those are important questions

however.. theres a 99.999% chance that the healthy gsp is killing the other one.. they are a fish that NEEDS their space..

There is something seriously wrong with the tank. What are the rest of the parameters? Either you tank is going through a cycle, or there is a lack of bio filtration on this tank.
