HELP SNAIL PROBLEM!!!

i have a massive snail problem. the thing is they just apeared...hundreds of them. when i fed the fish in this particular tank around 7pm everything was ok. i just got done watching a movie (around 4am) and turned the lights on to find hundreds of theses very small what apear to be snails coverthing the tank. i have no idea where they came from. i have never put snails in this tank before and have not added any plants in the past 6 to 8 months or fed them anything out of the ordinary. if anyone can shed some light on this i would greatly appreciate it.:nilly:
 
Your snails are Malaysian trumpet snails. They are nocturnal species that burrow under the substrate. Take a look at the bright side. They prevent your substrate from going compact which would have resulted in anaerobic pockets that when disturbed, can release hydrogen sulfide which can kill your fish quickly. Control your food rations. They thrive on food abundance. More tips can be found here.

Rarely is it really a snail problem and more likely a feeding problem.

Snails are actually nice to have, they clean your tank of uneaten food, clean up you decorations of algae and such although they may be unsightly they are part of your clean up crew and help to prevent things from rotting in your tank which can be worse.
 
yes i am aware of the benifits of snails, i have some in my salt water tanks. i just didnt know what they were or how they got there or if they were going to be a problem or not. thanks guys.
 
I have a strange snail that is a pest species but not a trumpet snail in my tank, but instead something that has a patchy coloured shell. any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem, but mine are pond snails. Do I need to worry about them eating my plants? It seems like they are doing more than a cleanup job, than actually eating my plants, but I am certainly not an expert.
