Help stock a 125-150 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My guys have always been good eaters and have gone for pellets no problem. I have had senegals and ornates. I would say a Senegal or palmas, delhezi would probably be better than an ornate for a 125, although again, I think a 125 would be okay if not permanently, at least for a very long time given that the ornate is not 20"+ inches

Thanks again man. You've be invaluable during this process. I've learned a lot. So final stocking I'm shooting for would be

1 Vieja Heterospilas
1 Blood Parrot
1 Chocolate Cichlid
1 Nicaraguan Cichlid
4 Rainbow Cichlids
1 Senegal/Marbled/Delhezi Bichir

Of those 3, are any of them noticibly different from a personality/activity level? Looks wise I like the Delhezi best but also want something that will be fairly active and not hiding all the time.

I have 3 WC bichirs and 3 rope fish and all of them have been relatively easy to convert to feeding pellets. But it is best to feed them some fish regularly too, frozen is fine like tilapia or you can get silversides. Also frozen krill works well.

If you want an active bichir that swims around a lot, get a Senegal or a Palmas Polli. Delhezis are also awesome though - I have one. They are really attractive. Activity levels on those guys are a little less consistent, though a lot of people have active ones.

I think the 125 is probably the smallest you'd consider for the Ornate, but I know that some have done it. Their growth reportedly slows down considerably after 10-12 inches or so.
Most people say that the CB ornates stay 20 or less.
The other three will stay under 13-14" if captive bred, most likely.

We can get some other poly opinions in here too about the Ornate combo in here. I only have limited experience.

The Het. is a nice choice in cichlid. They do not get overly large, great color and make for a pretty good community fish. The downside is that they grow super slow. here is my male.

As for bichirs, you really cant go wrong with a del. Nice and active with good pattern.

Beautiful! The ornates truly are beautiful but that delhezi DMD123 DMD123 is stunning! You guys have definitely not made it any easier. Was your ornate an active one Gourami Swami Gourami Swami

That het is gorgeous! I'm hoping to pick up a few in the coming weeks either from cota or another fish store told me their source has them. We'll see if that's accurate once they get them in. You and J jaws7777 were the ones that opened my eyes to the species and now, well, I've got to have one.

Once I'm ready to stock the bichir, it will likely come down to what I can find. Senegals are everywhere but I'll probably opt for an ornate, delhezi, or palmas as they are quite stunning.

Thanks again guys for the help. I'm pretty happy with this stocking. If i had it my way I'd throw a bunch of hets in there with all the other species too but the wife has laid down the law that I can't get a tank that is anymore than 18 inches front to back. So i've got to work with what I can.

My ornate was fairly active, usually cruising around near the bottom. At feeding time he would go right to the top with the cichlids. My senegals were active as well, and I have heard Delhezi's are the same way. I think any of those species would be good

Cool and glad you like hets soo much i love them lol

My ornate is incredibly active always out. 20170221_210244.jpg
