Help! There's something wrong with my Jar...?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just rinsed the sponge according to your insruction... if Grumpy survives this...I'll def invest in a cannister filter...if my jar...Grumpy doesn't make it...I might take a break from the big tank... :(

Hm...a few of these mentioned things wil def be on the shopping list tomorrow as it's midnight here already...if only there are 24hr fish stores!

I've put a few balls in it's going to be hard not feeding the bichir for a bit... they're going to form a congo line of endless starring until i feed them...

I have sand substrate... the only rotten thing i end up finding today are under the roots of my aquatic plants... wonder if that added to it?

Bloated face/Sunken eyes, redness under his scales... I was able to touch him and he was not slimy at all... also he seems to have a bloated back, his stomach is okay... his back is bloated...

Slightly raised scales on one side, the scales didn't rise up anymore since this morning but his face is looking more bloated... I've put him in a hospital tank for treatment now.. but he's not doing very well... I have a feeling the poor thing is not going to make it.

Currently being treated with KanaPlex (my first time using it as I've never successfully treated dropsy in any of my fish)

I'm sad now.. :(

are you that sure you have dropsy? you did mention you have seen dropsy before..is it appearing on fish you have had before? just make sure all your water paramters are ideal. if your hospital tank is too small consider setting up a large drum you can begin pumping good water in and out in a circular motion. steady balance is key here and it sounds like he has gone through a lot so far so if you can do that do it in a way that the paramters dont change but allow more water then that will be your best bet.

He's dead...

I cried and held him in my arms for a long long time

He was my first monster, he was only 17" (I was finally able to measure him)

Just a mini memorial for all the good times Grumpy has given me...

1 month after I first got him, this is in a 20g tank waiting for the large 180g to arrive. He had torn fins when i took him home from the closing pet store. all 2.5" of him! Where are the tank mates??? Hiding...

First time in his monster home! 1 week after moving, and he stops freaking out over the pipe.. That was his corner until he got too big for it, then we had to remove it as he doesn't seem to get that he no longer fit in there.

You KNOW when someone takes a bad picture of you it's going to end up somewhere on the internet...lol

He was 17" the little rascal! He was one of the best fish I've ever had!! My first monster..It's so sad he has to go like this... I did what I could :( Thank you everyone for all your advice and help. Although the water and everything was as much in check as possible something didn't go right and poor Grumpy had to pay the price.

R.I.P. Grumpy

:(

Oh man, that is sad. I was following the thread, but unfortunately i could not offer anything useful. The worst thing is that you don't even know what went wrong.

RIP Grumpy

oh man, i feel very sorry for you and your fish and not so helpful. i dont even want to go back and try work out where it went wrong. i can say though that i have seen that milky look in water and i think its bacteria load thriving of too much toxic nutrient. only the other week i dropped some fish off to a store and they had that problem. i told the shop about it and am not sure if they did anything but 50 of the 300 fish that went in that system died that week.

i did go back, you had a lot of foam and murky water after a 25 percent exchange and maybe a blackout. the foam indicates a high organic load, possibly spurred on by a crash on oxygen or something wrong with the change water.
either way this means you mustve had a decent biomass of stuff living then dying in the tank.
what i would like to see on home fish tanks is a filter set up with a swirl separation unit with a tapered bottom so that muck can be drained off as opposed to staying in the tank and growing things you dont want. then the water can go direct to your media. i hav these on my 2000 litre recirc tanks and i tell ya i tap of so much stinky crap every few days and it makes me shudder to think of what it used to do to my water before i had the ability to tap it off to waste.

Sorry for your lost, he was a great looking fish...RIP Grumpy.
