Yea they both come with two sponges each for the bacteria grown on bacteria. I know this may sound stupid but a friend of mine said if i rinse out the sponge that the bacteria still stays so i been cleaning i wanted to ask if i should just leave the sponge dirty instead of rinsing it will that help in anyway.??

tap water kills the bactiria, i forgot this and had a tank crash ending in $300+ in dead fish...and roomates feeding didn't help

Look, if you don't start reading, this fish will be sick for the rest of its life. I'm sorry, but this is silly. Have you done no research whatsoever? And you just decide, for the hell of it, to pick up a fish which grows to four feet in captivity? This is one of the basics of fishkeeping. Please, please research. There is abundant information on this website alone which would help keep this, or any other fish, healthy, and apparently, you haven't seen need to use it. I have been extremely patient, but honestly, you're treating this whole issue like it's a trip to the supermarket, and this is much, much more important. He's counting on you. The least you could do is a little reading prior to taking on such a huge responsibility.

Well first of all im using this site to try to help it i could be a senseless fishowner and be like oh well it will get better, but im taking the time to ask to better his needs... i dont need to get jumped on for this im asking for help yea theres somethings things i dont know but im new at the fish hobby and when i went to the lfs i asked if this fish would need any special needs or if i can keep it in a 55 gallon. he said yea that will be fine you shouldnt have to worry about much hes not a picky eater and its a hardy fish. After seeing the growth rate in the first two weeks is when i decided to look more on this issue and i been trying to cope with the situation and get better housing because the fish has grown on me.

I have been reading on alot and ive grown to like fish keeping as a serious hobby. I am trying my best with what i got and with my current life situation to still give my fish the best that i can give them... all im asking is for a little help so i can help him get better.
I will admit there are still alot of things i dont know. With that being said i want to learn more and after finding this site i hope to become better.

Oooops... :( guess i been messing up...... i have been rinsing in tap water

To me, this sounds totally casual and careless. It sounds like you haven't read anything about tank maintenance, which is where you should have started, even before you kept any fish. I understand that you're here for answers to questions, but you have to take some personal responsibility and realize that you're keeping a very difficult fish, simply due to its size. You just don't understand how often we hear "The guy at the LFS said..." I have 3 rescued Pacu in my pond whose owners had this same excuse. What is needed is not an excuse, but personal responsibility. I have answered your questions, as I said, very patiently, and you saw how many members were willing to do so at the time that I was interacting with you. However, the above post just upset me, because you sound like someone who just doesn't care. If that's not the case, I'm sorry, but actions speak louder than words. Even your filter's instruction manual would have come with this information.

Edit: And your fish doesn't care about your financial situation! I'm sorry to be so blunt, but that's why every post with a question about a Pacu, or a Silver Aro, or a Red Tail, end up with people emphasizing the maximum size of the fish, the necessary tank size, etc. YOU have to be ready to take care of a fish. If you're not, don't get it. As I mentioned before, the fish isn't going to stop growing.

You know what, i dont really like excuses myself, one thing im going to start doing instead of reading about diseases and stuff on the catfish im going to concentrate more about filtration how to make my own sump, and especially about the bio filter which obviously i need to know more of. Thanks for the help if theres any other inputs or constructive criticism from anyone ill be more then willing to accept it thank you justonmoretank. I appreciate for guiding me and help me with my issues.

I think you are headed in the right direction. I am sorry I got upset, and if I offended you. I think part of the problem with the internet is that it's sometimes hard to understand where people are coming from, and that was my mistake. I jumped to conclusions, and I shouldn't have! This is just a serious situation, and I believed that you were taking it too lightly. However, now, I understand that's not the case. Continue your research, and if you run into any inconsistencies along the way, or something you don't understand, feel free to ask (but, be warned, a "tank size" discussion is almost a given on any RTC thread, LOL, so be ready). Again, my apologies, and my best wishes to you and your little (soon to be very big) RTC.

Thank you looking around for gill curl i found your post with the vetenerian very helpful. I will try to get calcium substitute and stuff it in one oof the shrimps i feed him hopefully that will help along with the better filtration of course :) nice indooor pond by the way. Hey justonemoretank since you have some knowledge i wanted to ask what do you think of a 2200 gallon metal frame pool temporarily as an indoor pond until i make the 7000 gallon pond? Will the RTC break the pool liner?
