hi guys , i want to ask for your expertise on the red tailed catfish , at the moment i have myn in a 182 gallon tank , 7 foot long , the question is realistically how big should i let him get before moving him to a bigger aquarium or even pond , would he be ok at 3 ft in this tank . im uk based and it seems to be less people here with knowledge of the bigger cats . any info would be great , Andy

You should upgrade to a bigger tank slightly before he's the length of the width of your tank. So 3 feet is absolutely out of the question for a tank that size. More like 1.5 feet.

Save yourself some money/pains and either get rid of it asap or buy a pond that you can set up indoors that is at least 8' long by 4' wide. Indoor pond is only an option if you own your own home and can put it on solid floor though.

I have a big red fella 2. He was 3 inches and hid when I bought m.. Now, he rules with a big clown knife and pleco. Easy maintenance now because they all eat primarily floating pellets but I believe they have outgrown the 150 long tank. Obviously doesnt know any different since born in captivity and is a great fish. Doesnt spook easily. Good luck with your river monster. Ha.

^^Is that your fish? You got anymore pictures? It looks sick!

Well kinda. He's at the lfs where I volunteer/work. We all take care of him. Had him since '92. I got 1 more pic of him. We use him as a garbage disposal. If anything comes in beat up or ugly, he gets a go at em. He eats ANYTHING. I mean octopus, koi, big catfish, pacu, piranha, anything. If it doesn't sell or looks bad, he swallows it. Don't keep RTC. Very few people can keep them for more than a year or two.
