So heres the story, i've had about 6 babys and 1 6inch that have all died on me either due to ich or jumping into a light bulb, or out of the tank. After 2 years i am know interestted in aro's again. I am planning on starting with anyone baby silver again in a 10 gallon tank until it grows bigger. What i wanetd to know is how can i set up my tank " water wise" to make a good home for another one. examples like temp, ph, type or filter. Appreciate the replies.

Are you serious?! 10 gal tank? I think you should get a bigger tank before trying to have a new aro again. The aro's wont survive in the 10 gal tank. That's why all your aro's die. And how come they are able to jump outside the tank? No glass cover or anything to cover the tank?

have you seen the new lights which mount under the water to 'tan' the fish as they would experience in the wild. not sure who they are made by but supposed to be very good and specific for aro's. i would also agree that a 10g tank seems to small especially as they grow so quick.

good luck with it

I would agree with the tank size. There is more to do with it then just the size of the fish. Such a small amount of water can have unstable parameters, myself I would recomend a 55g tank filled to 40g. Filter with a good sized sponge filter and have a submergable heater with a heater guard. Keep the aro by itself until 6" then you can add a few select tankmates.

This growout will last until the aro is 10" which should be about 6 months if starting with a baby 2.5 incher.

Come on read people.......

I like smaller tanks since it is easier for the aro to see the food. About the water i would just keep it as is from your faucet since trying to keep the water stable (same ph when you do waterchanges) is going to be harder and is less stressful if you just keep it the same.

yes, but the rate my aro grew that would last maybe 1 month, i started mine at 6 inch in a 180 and it found food fine.

There is alot more to do with water params then just pH. A 5g water change in 40g of water will be more stable then anything that can be accomplished in a freaking 10g tank. Feed the baby aro freeze dried blood worms, drop in one corner of the tank. They float for along time and your aro will soon learn where his food will be.

Thanks for contributing. I only plan on keeping the 10gallon since its only 2-3 inches big and switch it to 55gallon until it grows up to 6-8inches and move on from there. Whats the point of putting something that small in a 150gallon tank? Also my 55gallon had a cover, there was a 4 inch long 2 inch wide opening and the 6inch managed to get through. To get back on topic what about filtration?

So that it grows at a normal rate rather than being stunted from a small tank. I completely agree with Bdericks sentiments that anything smaller than a 55g is going to be a waste of time. I've put a 6" black in a 150g and I now have a green thats grown out from just under 6" in a 160g, and both grew fast and had no problems finding food. Search for my thread on Green Aro Growthrate if you need to see pics.

IMO if you don't have a 180g+ waiting or in the process of being set up you shouldn't be taking home a silver, they grow that fast...

yeah the longest i have kept one was growing it up to 6inches. ill definitely search your thread as i want a green one myself.
