Yes smaller tanks are much harder to maintain then big ones. One neon dieing in a 55 won't do much but can easily bring down a 10 gallon if you don't find it immediately.

Haven't had much luck with these tend to require more maintenance than any other filter, though much cheaper to set up and when working work well. Go with a good canister filter easier to service.get a good filter and a undergravel filter.
