Herbie style questions

Let me rephrase that last statement. Stupid smart phones....

Since my tank has corner overflows, should I do my herbie and safety drains in one corner w my returns in the other corner? Or does that not really matter?

I'm a new poster to the forum however I've been reading for a long time now. I have a 240G 8x2x2 that has two corner overflows just like yours. I'm using the same method having both my full siphon and emergency drain in one corner and my returns in the other. Works Great.

Thanks maac. How does it affect the eater level in the overflow w the returns? Also, could you give details on your flowrate and drain size?

Well the water level in the return overflow is the same as in the tank while the tank is in operation. However I do have a power head in that overflow with a piece of hosing on the outlet making it return to the tank that way the water in that overflow gets some circulation.

As far as for GPH through the herbie I have a 1.25" siphon and a .75" emergency. In my sump I have two Magdrive 18s at full flow which at about 5' of head height combined is roughly 2200GPH. The drain handles it fine and it's completely silent. All the research I did prior to hooking up the herbie has shown that a drain at full siphon can handle way more GPH than just gravity fed.

Thanks. My pump, w the 90 at the return to the tank should do right around 2000gph. My drain is 1.5" down to a 1" bulkhead w a durso emergency drain the same.

How far back is your drain turned on the line w the syphon?

As of now, I cut my herbie pipe 6" below the overflow. Is that right? Or should I be higher or lower? I'm test filling my sump and headed to get some glass tomorrow to build my sump

My gate valve on the siphon is turned probably 75% of the way closed, so I imagine it could handle a lot more flow if needed. I also have my siphon about 6" or so down from the top of the overflow. From what you've said I doubt you'll have any issues whatsoever.

Thanks a lot maac. This seems so easy now that I have some feedback. Jcardona uses these systems and is a big help too. I know once I get this setup and it works like it should, I'm going to try to have a sticky made. By the way, welcome to the forum and thanks for your help.

Is your 240 fresh or sw? My 300g is replacing my 240. Need another one? Im not far from pittsburgh haha

No problem, I had tried everything to try silencing my overflows on this tank since it's in my living room. Nothing worked perfectly until I used the herbie method, moves of ton of water and is dead silent, and really easy to make.

Actually in my previous post I forgot to mention that I have a 1.25" siphon to a 1" bulkhead and a 1" emergency to a .75" bulkhead. The smaller bulkhead was originally used for the returns but since it only handles maybe 5% of the total volume of the water it's still inaudible.

That tank has a colony of 25 adult tropheus duboisi maswa and 25 adult tropheus moorii bemba in it, and I wouldn't mind having another 240 :)
