1.). Ball or gate valve? I assume gate, but I'm having trouble locating a PVC gate valve

2.). Placement of valve? Due to the short stand, I had 90 almost instantly from the bulkhead, thus, placing the valve past the 90. Is this an issue?

Definitely a gate valve. You need the multiple turns to be able to fine tune the flow. You can get them on Amazon, good prices too http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=pvc+gate+valve&x=0&y=0

As for placement, I'd some halfway in between the bulkhead and the point where it spill into the sump should be fine; that's how mine is.

Since I'm such a nice guy (:D) I took apart my plumbing during my water change and took a pic of the inside of my gate valve. It's not really 80-90% closed like I said, more like 60-70% I'd say. Still, that's a lot of water being pushed through what is basically the equivalent of 3/4" pipe (gate valve is 1.5"). Now imagine if you up-sized this to 2", and opened the valve all the way. That would give you enough breathing room to run a ton of flow! By the way, I'm running two 1000gph pumps. Hope that helps visualize things

Thanks Jose! It's crazy how such a simple idea can work so well. I'm just amazed that more ppl don't use this. You were right in your other thread that mfk is known for big tanks, but reefers know how to Plumb. In fact, most of my reading was done on sw forums. Maybe sometime we can compile a thread of the other methods to spread the light!
