Mines looks bout the same eats like a champ healthy in a 220 w/ tankmates but I actually got 2 from the same tank at the lfs cause I couldnt make up my mind the black or the regular heres a pic of the black too lazy to go get one of the reg sorry bout pics noo to pics lol

that is the closest i have seen to mine.... it is def cool!!!
 
I read somewhere about the red trim on the dorsal fin being on males only... is that true? Or is the spangles on the gill plate the best way to sex them?

Years ago the red trim denoted a northern race and a southern race. With decades-tank-bred JD's it doesn't mean much.
Summed up, geographical variation in the wild, some nice fin color in the hobby. Nothing to do with gender.
