Here is what a meter long aimara looks like

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This makes zero sense to me......

This should be just like Rocky vs Ivan Draggo.... IF a guy tried hard enough I don't see why you couldn't rival WC sizes. With the technology we have now? We should be able to grow them larger then wild. Sucks that it seems reality proves the exact opposite. Am I the only one that thinks this is completely backwards from how it SHOULD be? With all that technology has to offer shouldn't we be able to grow bigger fish then the wild? I'd like to think an MFKer could care well enough for a panfish to grow him up to record size, next level of dedication - larger fish. Can growing an ambush predator in captivity be that difficult? Open water I'd say yes, but ambush is the key -we should be able to provide ample room given natural habitat they're found in.......

Maybe we are so busy trying to make them into social butterflies that once all the fire is removed and they are community fish fed pellets the desire to live dwindles?

Maybe it is best to keep them alone in the dark with large meals of live food?

I'm on my second and I swear they hate community life. My Lac and Mbigua are out all the time. Never hide, hover mid water. Aimara ever only comes out to eat. IF I walk by the tank and hes out he hides. Opposites of the other wolves, yet when I didn't keep with other wolves the Aimaras seemed to act like the other wolves......

I was wondering when you were going to chime in.;)

I can't believe how inspiring a single picture can be.....

I want to put that eye shining pic on my fridge. I get goosebumps every time I see it. I am seriously thinking about moving my Aimara now. That's what it could be and I feel like mine hates his friggin life right now. When theyre happy they just devour food. When unhappy they seem to barely eat enough to stay alive, and the growrate goes in the crapper.

I picked one up for a guy when I got my Lac. At that time it was like 10". That guy put like 8" on that fish within a year pushing it's size several inches past my fish which had a few inches on him at one time. Monster in his own lair vs community life........

We need Bruner to chime in..... I wouldn't be surprised if his are aroundd 2.5'

No one laugh at me here but I have always been of the opinion that real, natural sunlight is a key in the growth of fish.Years ago I tossed a group of African cichlids in my backyard pond due to lack of better housing for them at the time.I could not really have a good look at them from an above view so I'd kind of lost interest in them until the end of the summer when came to collect them.In the span of two or three months they had outgrown and had better color than the cichlids in my tanks that they were separated from.
I can't help but conclude that if one were to keep an aimara in a temporary outdoor pond set up that it would do very well.

awesome !! , im just getting ready to move house . i have two of these , mine are babies . each in there own tank about 8 to 10 inch now i would say . i was gong to try them together in my 4x4 square tank divided down the middle . but i keep thinking that just one in the tank by its self would be the best , love seeing these pics of monster aimara :D

Then why not setup a tank and use HQI metal halide light? They are the best to grow corals (the light wraps around it), a nice way to mimic the sun than T5, LED.

Hahaha I have one around 15" or so too. Not sure if ours would ever grow that huge just like how most black rhoms in captivity never reach the size of the Wild caught ones. The large ones here were all imported in at the very least 24" for them to grow to a truly formidable size.

Not sure I agree with this. Rhoms are limited but I've found multiple people that have grown piraya to 20in and caribe to like 15in. Size is dependent on species I would think. Look at how large catfish grow in captivity. Can you grow an Aimara over 40in? Probably not but I'd guess 30-36in isn't impossible.

I think you can....it s gonna take a long time. Solo fish in a large tank or pond with current.

I have a feeling most of these monsters are older fish.

A experiment is needed.

Maybe DB junkie DB junkie can move his aimara to a large pool as a solo fish with some current and see what happens.
