Here's why you SHOULD buy that cute little RTC at your LFS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fishes33 I've read on a fishing charter site for south america that rtc tastes like pork. My buddy in North Carolina says the same. He Kept one in a 125 until it was almost 3' and then ate it cause he was tired of the water changes. He invited me over, but I don't think I would ever eat an aquarium fish. Especially knowing chemicals, toxins and other things that go in the tanks.

where i come from they want to know the size tank your keeping it in . even then you have to order them. they dont just sell them to anyone

Its all about money, they dont give a damn what happens to the fish. If you go to an LFS or any pet store, all animals are in small cages/tanks, they dont feed them well etc. This LFS I got to has RTCs and TSNs about 1 inch to 3 inch, they got alot of them. And I know some person whos clueless will buy them. They sell fish that are brackish and fail to mention it to people as well. Its just money for them, they dont care about the fish/animals life.

where i go must be a good fish shop then.you go in the place and have a job to leave . as they dont stop talking about the way you should care for your new fish

Yep, i would not eat an aquarium fish either ... i put chemicals ... not approved for farming (e.g. malachite green).

Bagarius Yarelli tastes really nice (colored flesh) and so does asian RTC (not like pork imo). Pangasius Gigas is also quite nice - similar to ARTC. Wallago is very nice too (i think the most expensive of the ones that i have listed) Overhere these are just food fish ...more expensive than tilapia and carp mind you, but food neverthelss. BTW, no one keeps these fish as pets overhere. Some keep walking catfishes to ridiculous sizes (usually at chicken/poultry farms ... yes you guessed it, the dead chickens are its food - they are basically carcass disposers)

RTC is 'exotic' only because it is from amazon.

Thanks for bring up this Year+ Old thread :D Get lets see how peoples opinions have changed :grinno:

My opinion remains the same :D

I have still yet to see a large catfish epidemic spread the country side.

I cant remember the last time I saw a large cat in any of my LFS's

JMO as always........................

I think that they should not be banned, but I do think that you should have to apply for a special permit to keep them. If you can prove that you can comfortably house an adult rtc for life then you pay for a special permit that allows you to keep one. JMO, same for other large catfish, it could be a all in one permit for fish over a certain size!

:iagree:
