Here is My Escondido.. Some scars but he's cool. I think my fish is bigger but skinnier than your fish. Well fed or genetic? I dont know..

you have both. So you can tell better.. Actually I think your's have bigger pearls at the front section. Is it because we wonder too deep just because they have a different name to them.. Could it be just an individual fish difference thing?

nice pearls on your Carpinte.. I want one later. Your fish is stunning!!

The animal guy is that a male or female Escondido that you have? Vontehillo does look nice :) I wonder can you have all three variants share the same tank? Has anybody tried that? Looking at the Vontehillo, I am thinking I would like to try that? Also do all variants of the males get the hump on their heads?

Where in Mexico is "Vontehillo"? I couldn't find anything on Google?

Matt
probably the same spot like escondido and Chariel??

It's like Cutting up a pie and giving every slice a different name so they'd be different. But then in reality they are all from one Carpinte pie..

I dont know much about locations, but they dont look so far apart in anything.

Thats not true. They are 2 different locations and are about as different as carpintis can be. Chariel and Lahillas are the similar variants and locale, being as close as 1/2 a mile from each other, maybe even a little closer.

That there is so much variation among a given species should indicate the folly of trying to fit a specific race into a neat little bundle. Photos of one fish here or there don't prove anything. Without a handful of photos of each race, and not tank bred fish at that, this entire discussion is pretty pointless.

All I know is the OP's fish is great looking!

The collecton location for Escondito is Laguna La Vega Escondida near the mouth of Panuco river.

The collection location for Chariel is Laguna de la Puerta and Laguna Chairel (next to it)...both near the mouth of the Panuco River.

According to Eric Hanneman, they're the same (Escondito and Chariel): http://www.cichlid.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1552&highlight=escondito&page=3

Is Lahillas also found near the mouth of the Panuco River (by Tampico, MX). If so, it's also probably the same fish...

I stand corrected (if those discussing it in your link are correct). I had been informed that the escondido were about 20+ miles up the Panuco, different from Chariel & Lahillas which were a closer locale.

To me, the escondido is the only carpintis that looks different from every other variant. If it were the exact same fish as chariel & lahillas, why would it consistently be greener, with different facial markings than all the others?

I have no idea...just going off of what I've read by people who collected down there.

I posed the question at the Cichlid Room Companion, where we'll get answers vs. speculation :)
