Hi.. New RBP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when my pygos were at 4" size I feed once or twice a day. depends on the amount of food but there's really no need to feed 3 times a day if you stuff them during every feeding.
a lot of pygos look kind of ugly when they are in adult or sub-adult size due to over feeding. if you plan to feed them more often then make sure you have enough current in the tank for them to burn off all the extra calorie. When mine were at around 6-7" size I feed once or twice a week. more frequent water change is always good, since you used to keep discus so you know how to keep water quality top notch.
pretty much all the fish in the amazon time their breeding season with raining season, so trigger would be similar. rbps are very easy to breed compare to other pygos, sometimes they'll even breed when you don't want them to. the difficult ones are to get caribe and piraya to breed. could be your next challenge if you find breeding rbp is too easy :)

with 3 rbp do they fight alot?? becuz i was planning to get 3, is it worth getting 3?

welcome to MFK.
depends on your tank size, it's always good to get as many as you can.
with three it'll usually be better than just two since there's an extra fish in there so the aggression toward each individual is reduced. but if the weakest one is killed the aggression will be all directed to the next one so you might end up with just one.
if tank size allows, i would suggest to get a few more.

im new to this. the tank is 20gallon, i check the local fish store, only 1 fish store had baby RBP and theres only 3, should i wait for more to come?

Thanks for the advice,,
I have seen the last days that they are getting allot thicker across the neck (they look more muscular).
I think the LFS don't feed them nearly enough so they needed a bit more to get in to good condition.
But maybe i should feed them 2 times a day now, i don't want them to be ugly!!

Crabie or pirayas would be nice i have talked to my LFS and they will try to get some for me :D

yea, I always find the wild pygos has the better body shape than a lot of captive kept ones.
here's an example, the nattereri in the front is very overfed, got a big belly just like an overfed human.
the caribe in the back looks much better.

your rbps will outgrow the 20g very soon, better get ready to upgrade soon.
I would recommend you get at least a 75 gallon tank then get 2-3 more rbps of similar size to the mix.

your sayin that i can keep these 3 for a while and when i upgrade to a bigger tank i can put in 2 - 3 more baby rbp?? the big one wont attack the same one?

That depends on what size you upgrade to on how many you get but no, there pretty random on who gets the bites and fin nips.

My most beat up fish only gets attacked reguarly because its not that smart and thinks the back wall is its territory, meaning it swims behind everyone and gets in their space.

And nice pics of the overfed fish jp, was starting to think mine were getting fat but now I know what to look for better.
