HITH lATERAL LINE DISEASE IN CICHLA

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know it do help a lot when us, hobbysts, start a compilation of data about our experiences like this.

But for science, it cant be taken so serious because its kinda random stuff. As aquanero said, there are lots of variables involved.

Just because my ocellaris get HITH, as hullons ocellaris did, and we have 7.4 pH, withouth using almond leaves, we cant conclude 100% that the HITH was caused by non black water (no tanins + humic acid).

Our water have different compositions, we do different treatments to the aquarium, we feed our fish differently. See how you cant be 100% sure about anything?

I know here nobody intends to be a scientist, but I see lots of people with deep theorical knowledge, much more than me to be honest, like aquanero, RD. And thats why Im writting this.

I think the only real way to know this is by simple scientific methodology. Unfortunately I dont see any work with Cichla coming, principally for Cichla as a aquarium fish with HITH. Which is very sad, for me there are few things worst than losing a fish dont knowing exactly what to do even after researching a lot.

But ur guys compilating these data will be very helpful, because lots of hypothesis are being born here, this topic is the living proof of it.

Who knows if some day, one of us taking hold of all those ideas and hypothesis can test them applying scientific method. This would be what I call taking hobby to the next level. =p

And hope you guys dont mind if I take it to serious, but I was teached to think like this.

I am strongly considering doing this, since I do have some work-related training in medical case control studies and qualitative data analysis. I could use surveymonkey to design an interview that asks about a LOT of these conditions. With enough participation, something good could come of it. I just hope that when I post about it I can get some admin support (maybe even a stickie) and folks serious enough about spending 15 minutes of their time instead of backbiting each other!

I've hesitated to speak up before now because making this thing would be a huge hassle, taking up HOURS of reading the boards here and designing the survey. I don't know how people would feel about participating -- an online survey would require people to give their email to the survey's website, but the answers would be kept anonymous, which causes people to tell more of the truth! Otherwise, I could post the survey publicly and have people reply by PM-- but this may make people uncomfortable since I would be able to see names connected to answers. (I swear I won't tell that last guy you got into a flamewar with). It runs the risk of having folks fudge their answers a bit, you know? I want it to be good data.

What do you guys think? Would you be willing to respond by PM to a publicly posted survey? Would you prefer the emailed anonymous online version? Are you okay with either? Let me know. If the response is good enough, I'll start putting something together this weekend to post next week. <3

If you set it up Heather....we will come :)

I have not come up with anything concrete But i will never stop trying that is for sure !!!

This might have been touched on already in this thread ? I approached this issue as both a cichla and discus keeper with water quality and supplements. None of my Pbass has HITH knock on wood to date , it might be I haven't had them long enough (Ocel, kelberis, tems, azul) 2 years is longest kept to date and right around 20"+ mark.

My Discus however I have kept for 5 years plus with never a sign of HITH.. So I am applying what I do with my discus to my cichla.

Water changes with pre treated aged water ( carbon block filtered , aged 24 hours, with a media bag of almond leaves floating in stock barrel) .
at least once a week - nothing new here for most of us on this forum. Tank water is 6.5 PH with around 200 TDS

The difference may be in the diet as I fortify with Vitamin C and an amino acid /Omega 3/6 supplement.

For the larger cichla I now place a few drops on the shrimp , catfish nuggets, beefheart chunk and tilapia filet ( I also stuff a presoaked food pellet into each piece as well).

Smaller cicha only get pellets presoaked in supplements .

These are the supplements I have been using:

My two cents
