HITH lATERAL LINE DISEASE IN CICHLA

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What were we discussing the other day?

"Too many keepers here that have monster cichla with out HITH to say they are susceptible to it. IMO it happens when something is off in their environment. Ken, Artty, Hu, G, Myself, and others have had or have 20"ish fish without it. Not "slating" him, this is a media section that we have an open forum to talk and learn why some big fish get it."

The obvious question Hu is has anything changed? Food, params, water change volume, bullying?

I'm sure you've considered these factors but just worth a mention...

Way to call a guy out right after he admitted his fault, real productive. :p:WTF:

Yes - water changes and other nitrate-dilluting/removing approaches (like plants) will counteract the additional nitrate produced by a dirty filter.

I'm not a fan of canister filters because they're a PITA to clean...and people tend to take an out of sight, out of mind approach with them. If all of the shirt that accumulated in an FX5 on a tank full of bass over a year was in a filter sock on a sump...or on the bottom of your tank, would you clean it more often?

Matt

Yeah people probably do give it the out of site out of mind approach but best way to tell if your canister filter is in need to cleaning... Shut it off and turn back on. If you turn it back on and alot of crap gets blown into your water than its time. In my FX5's I run just sponges on the side and bio in the center... No carbon bags or other stuff.. They are just for hold the good bacteria I need. Any heavy waste is getting picked up when I do my weekly water change of 65-75% of the tanks water... If I cleaned the canisters when I do my changes I'd be cycling my tank over and over again.

Let's be honest. Would be easy to not come forward and pretend we are bad ass. It's people like Hugh who IMO is dedicated enough to bring it out in the open. This will help everyone. Let's hear more. Bassguy, glad you stirred the pot.

I just put bio only in 1 of my fx5's that I have on my 180. The other has bio and a bag of chemi-pure. Im not getting the best flow out of that FX5 so i will be cleaning that 1 out tomorrow. What I did notice about the HITH with my bass was once i did the water changes and used General Cure it stopped and they even healed up some you could still see it on the one that had it bad but you could tell it was healed. So my question to some of you more experienced guys is what did you use to cure your issue?

When I had my big bass my azuls were the only one's that had HITH. BUT...they were the only bass in the tank that wouldnt eat pellets. They were on a mp diet. I would sneak pellets in but for the most part they would notice it and spit it out. Just like you...or I would spit out a bone in a piece of fish filet. THe orino's and kelberi in the tank would eat straight up massivore....didnt really have a taste for shrimp. So IMO diet has a lot to do with it. On top of that certain sub species of cichla develop HITH a lot easier than others.

From what I am gathering it sounds like a couple factors really draw attention for me. Diet being one. ANd black water being another. Is there any keepers out there w/ 20"+ azuls, occels or tems without HITH? If so, do those tanks contain high amounts of driftwood and/or use almond leaves for black water?

I clean my Fx5's only once a year for my big bass. I have a Fx5 I haven't cleaned in two years or more on another tank and still no HITH ... I bet my water changes helps with that situation.

I absolutely agree, not speaking for all cichlids but certain species of bass are more prone to HITH, think about how almost all of the intermedia that were in aquaria had HITH no matter how well the tank was over filtered. Speaking of other species, I've read plenty of stories in the crenicichla forum about how some species were very susceptible to HITH and it couldn't be helped.....and it just so happens that like dogofwar said all of those species are blackwater species, so think that has something to do with it.

Remember, once your fish has been infected, it will always carry it! The protozoan that causes HITH and HLLE normally lives in the gut, and will invade other tissues when the fish is stressed (Nutrient deficiency? Fighting? Mating?). There is also another excellent article on this board that discusses it, and also a non-antibiotic treatment that will help reduce the load of it living in your tank (since it lives in the gut, it's shed in feces) and fish -- and it's cheap too! It's the magnesium in Epsom salts, and it works best if you can get them to eat it (pre-soak pellets in a 3% solution). :) I have actually used it to save a very very sick gold severum I was given.

Please read this CAREFULLY!! It is worth the time to improve the quality of life for your fish!! http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?339362-Treating-Hexamita-aka-Spironucleus
