Actually, firefighters have to go to school and fire academy to become a firefighter. Its not as easy as you think. Its not all about hands on work there is also class work. Firefighters can also get better positions if the excel in school. With a higher education they can become a Lt., captain, chief, fire marshal, arson investigator, and all sort's of other position. Many people think when you become a firefighter your just only a firefighter and nothing else. I am going to go to UCLA in a year to study fire science. There are actually degree's you can get.

I agree Im just suggestimng it is best to keep options open, and it is easier to go to firefighter school as a doctor or lawyer (just random examples) than it is the other way around.

Take note, it's very rare that they "run into burning buildings", and only risk their lives if the life of another is at risk in the house. You're more likely to die of a heart attack than from burning. Not to mention that Hero-Factor is big, it's like the coolest job ever :) My cousin's going into it too. Good Luck man!

I just realised that the ad at the top of the page was for firefighter training LOL!

You are a true hero for doing a job that endangers your life to SAVE people. If it's your dream DON"T let anyone get in the way of it, follow your dream. You will be helping so many people, you should be proud of that.

Meh, we are all proud of you and see the merit in pursuing such a selfless and noble career. She's just old as dirt and people don't care about the mouth to brain filter after a certain point, I think when one starts reeking of mothballs and polydent.

At any rate next time she expresses concern you won't be able to keep her granddaughter in enough purdy dresses you could state when you reach advanced age you can look back at all your accomplishments and think of all the people you helped over the years thus feel extremely fulfilled. Passive aggressively making her contemplate her own mortality without being rude back. Muhahaha.

Depending on where you are the pay can be awesome...my brothers girlfriend has a friend where if they reach a certain retirement age they continue to get paid the best four years of their career over the rest of their lives...so this guy worked crazy hours...got 80k a year...so thats 320k to blow on whatever.
