Holy ammonia levels batman!!!!! (pic)

I was under the impression that you shouldnt do W/C's during cycling, w/ or w/o fish???? I did a 40% W/C two days ago but it didnt help. I also added a bottle of the supposed bottled bacteria crap from API. I knew it wouldnt help but I though I would give it a try. A week later, nothing. Wasted $4 of my hard-earned money on that crap!

So everybody thinks I should start doing large W/C's? Isn't that just a short-term fix to the high ammonia? I mean, if the bacteria isnt established, its gonna keep climbing right? Unless of course I'm doing a W/C everyday...

Yes you need to do a water change and no it will not keep your tank from cycling. What kind of fish do you have in there that can live in that high ammonia?

Well, I have about 10 large feeder goldfish (approx 2"), 1 4" common pleco, 2 3" tinfoil barbs, and a small GT and JD (about 2")

The TB, GT, and JD had to be moved into this tank as I'm holding some other fish for a friend in my smaller tank. All fish are doing fine, swim actively and eat like if there was no tomorrow.

I will setup some water tonight so I can get the chlorine out and I'll do a big WC tomorrow...

What do you have in your Fx5?

Aside from the regular foam blocks, all three baskets have 9 pot scrubbies each. The top one also has some ceramic rings...

I would say that is your biggest problem, I would switch to more traditional bio media. I would also get a Python (for w/c's) and some water conditioner and ad it directly to your tank during water changes...

LOL...I pass through Modesto whenever I go to Yosemite.....

Cow drainoff in your water well?????WTF, do you live on, or by, a farmland...OK, here is my 2cents....Chnage your water NOW!!!!You see how green that bottle was, do 50% change now....Another 50% tomorow.....Exchange those pot scubbies for crushed coral....

crushed coral will mess with PH though, why would you do that? Get some rings in there or something other than the scrubbies! And do 50% water changes 1-2 times a day until you get the amonia down.

My ph remains 6 to 6.5 all year round.....But you right, I have seen ph scale jump a little due to crushed coral....The stuff stores massive amounts of benficial bacteria....

Do the 50% water change....Wait.....Measure....WIth spikes so high, I am sure the first change will do little, so keep on doing a 50% change every day untill that level is down....

6-6.5 is considered low for most tropical fish. Ideal is around 7.2...
