Holy ammonia levels batman!!!!! (pic)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok I'm back....

NO, I don't live on a damn farm! I live in a normal neighborhood just like everybody else! I think you confused Modesto with Patterson

Ok, I'll do the water changes. I have a python, and I have been adding the conditioner to the water as the new water is going in.

As for the bio media, if I change it all out, the whole process is gonna start over right? Cause whatever bacteria was starting to grow is now gone. Should I change out the baskets in intervals? Like 1 week apart? I thought scrubbies were good for wet/drys and submerged!?!?!?!

i'm using scrubbies in my canisters and they are working well, but i've heard they work better in situations where they aren't totally submerged (w/d)

Yea, you could use some bettre biomedia, like ceramic rings, bio balls, matrix rocks, etc. Do you have another tank you could house some of your fish in in the meantime? I mean, leave the feeders, but thats all you want in there to cycle your tank. Doing a cycle with fish doesnt mean stock the tank completely, its better to start a few fish at a time, and slowly increase. And yea, youd be restarting with the new media, but youd be much better off in the long run.

What's your pH?

Nitrifying Bacteria won't grow if your pH is too low..

Ammonia is acidic, and will lower your pH. Might be a conflicting issue if your alkalinity is low.

Crushed Coral might be a good idea if you don't have much alkalinity and your pH is low. It can also act as a bio-media.

What's your temp? Turn it up to speed up bacterial growth..

How old is your test kit? Might be outdated.. but that's a long shot.

ya I started with 2 fish, then a weeks or so later I add 3 more, then waited and added moer, etc.

There are also a difference in pot scrubbies, I dont think they all work well as bio media, and agreed they work better in W/D filters...

and unless you have a reading for nitrites now, you wont be starting fresh :D...

ph stays at about 7.4~7.6 Temp is 80-81 degrees. I've read lots of other threads were people suggest scrubbies and say they work great for them

And last night I had a slight nitrite reading, about .50ppm. Test kit was purchased new from a LFS about a month ago. Not sure how old it is though. Do these things have an expiration date marked on the package? I'm at work right now so I cant check...

wth is a pot scrubbie. somebody link me to a pic stat!

oh F that. throw those away and get ceramic rings ASAP. (thx jcardona1)

that bad eh? For some reason I dont think the scrubbies are the problem. I mean, there are lots of people here that use them in canister filters with no problems and their parameters are fine-no dead dying fish must mean good parameters right?

Also, some people completely submerge their wet/dry media and still no ammonia/nitrite problems. Any othe ideas? And it cant be the test kit because I tested my small tank and tap water and ammonia always reads 0...
