So sorry to hear about this!
My family had a fire about 3 years ago - a faulty chimney flue in the house we were renting allowed sparks from the fireplace to ignite the side of the chimney / house.
Although we lost a lot of fish and possessions in the fire, I feel lucky every day that our family was unharmed.
In addition to checking smoke detectors, my advice is to check your insurance.
The fire department assumed that we did not have renters insurance because so few do (!) - less than 1/4.
We fortunately did have renters insurance (though USAA which is top-notch) and were able to replace our possessions and have a nice place to stay while finding a new house.
