How big am I 10", 12" or 14"?

I believe the measuring method most commonly used is TL. Tip of mouth/snout to end tip of tail. That's what biologists and majority of state enforcements use anyways. I personally always drop an inch or two down when mentioning the length of my fishes. But I Personally think that the most correct method to use is the TL method. I don't think one should count streamers but if one happens to include the length of the streamers they shoul mention that. That's my take on it anyways.

I always count the length of the fish tip to tip. As someone said it takes up space so why not count it. It would be frowned upon to cut the streamers off so why not count them while measuring?

I would say 10" (SL) and 14" (TL) Most sellers will tell you 14"

Most people measure fish to the base of tail. I have been told that is the standard of the hobby. So I say 10". If I was selling I would specify 10" fish 14" overall.

People use SL because finage and tails vary do to different fin types that have been bred into the fish. If you have a 10" SL standard Oscar and a 10" SL Viel Tail oscar you could say the VT is 15" but it is really the same size as the 10" fish. It helps keep people honest.

If you request the size of a fish being sold you will almost always get total length

I always ask SL and TL if i am requesting size. Exactly for the reason this thread shows everyone has there own way of doing it.

I always go head to end of the tail so total length, and when I sell them I specify Total length, when you go fishing do you not measure head to the end of the tail, I know the fisheries guys do when checking your fish.
