How big is a monster tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was just thinking about the "it's all relative" thing. Being from WV I can certainly relate to that. :irked:

More on topic though, it really does depend on the owner / viewer. I have told people about my tanks but they usually have no concept of tank size. When they come in my house the first thing they see once they come down the stairs is my 55 gallon tank. You would be amazed at how many people think it is huge. Once I casually lead them to the dining room and see the 210 and 300 their jaws just drop.

IMO it has to do with the fish the tank houses. I would consider a 3x3x2 tank(~130gal) a monster if it housed Aros, Cichla, Rays, etc. but a couple standard 180s that I have seen, I wouldn't consider monster because of the fish that are in them.

When I'm the biggest fish swimming in my tank;sometimes I just think I'm a big fish taking care of the rest....my lot in life..but...but... there's someone else lurking in there that's contemplating it's next meal and I'm on the menu...That would be a true monster...seriously, State of mind. life is a lesson in relativity and conventions are meaningless....

When I buy a house, seal the basement and have two Arapaimas down there with which to threaten misbehaving children, that's Monster.

No, seriously, it is obvious that there is not any clear definition of "Monster" when we're talking about tanks. For dimensions, I'd think 300 is the smallest monster tank. For fish, anything aggressive is monster, to me. Even Dwarf Puffers! But to dream of acres and acres of tropical ponds, that's Monster to me.

I think it depends on the fish. :D

Here is a pond/tank we made in front of our house. I like considering it as monster since it holds at least 350G. It houses a giant snakehead(12") and a few 12 incher Kois. There is a divider of course. It's made of cement though...:nilly:

Sorry for my crappy representation. lol!

cheers,
jk

I THINK THAT A MONSTER TANK IS A MONSTER TANK WHEN YOU THINK ITS A MONSTER TANK. REMEMBER THERE IS ALWAYS A BIGGER DOG FOR THE BIG DOG. ANY TANK THATS BIGGER THAN THE YOUR OLD TANK IS A MONSTER TANK. I JUST SET UP MY 100G AND ITS A MONSTER. COMPARED TO MY OLD 36G.

I agree! :headbang2
My first aquarium was like 40G. Then a 50, then a 90, then a pond(130+) then the last one(400+). To be monster, one must never settle with a single water container that holds a magnificent creature - small or big, it doesn't matter. It's all in your head. :nilly:
