IMO, feed lightly, water change frequently, and closely monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Save your money on the chemicals, if possible get some already cycled media from another already cycled tank. I'm not sure if you mentioned what filtration is on the tank, but if you can replace some of the media in it with well seasoned media then it will help speed up the cycling process. A small amount of ammonia isn't good but won't kill your fish either, just keep it in check with regular water changes until the biological filter gets established.
 
i have the old media but its FILTHY ITS SO DIRTY CAN NOT EXPLAIN LOL
the media looks like a sandwhich notjoking the guy had the tank for 3 years and im assuming he did not clean it for 3 years as well lol haha
ii have the rena xp4
 
When you say you have the old media, do you mean it is still running in a filter on a well established tank or is it sitting in a box or bucket somewhere?

What I'm suggesting is to take some media already colonised with live bacteria out of a filter on an existing set up and put it in your filter full of new media. It's not really the age of media that is important, but how long it has been running on an established tank for.
 
The old media is all sitting in a bucket outside been like that for a 2-3 weeks tho bucket is dry also all the gunk and stuff is dry as well I also have a pond it's been running for a while should I use that media? It has those plastic bio balls thanks

WHAT ! Why didnt you add this too the tank that was the fist piece of advise i told you via PM and would basically have cycled your tank on the spot. Unfortunately the bacteria on that media would be all dead by now. It needs to go out of the old filter straight into the new tank, also needs to be done AFTER adding fish. Otherwise the bacteria in that old filter media just die off.

Can you get more dirty media ? if so you can cycle the tank MUCH more efficiently then the store products. Heres what you do

Step 1) Get the old media, the dirtier the better, Should look like a slimy mess.

Step 2) Clean this media DIRECTLY into the main tank, rinse it squeeze it whatever into the main tank until it's looking clean and the tank is a mess. Water should be cloudy and brown if you have difficulty seeing through the mess your own the right track this WILL NOT HARM ANY FISH, looks bad but harmless.

Step 3) Wait .... Normally the tank will be crystal clear again in 24hours or so. All this mess will get sucked up into your filter seeding all the beneficial bacteria's needed to cycle the system.


that's it, it's simple as that.
 
Pretty much agree with the thread above, though i would place the dirty media in the bottom basket of your xp4 filter.

Do you have any other fish tanks running? If so what are the filters running on them?

What media do you now have in each basket of your rena xp4?
 
I have no orther tanks running except this one and a koi pond outside koi pond filter is Laguna 3200 it has bio balls plastic ones and big foam rings
Rena filter has only bio and the foam
I did not buy any chemical pads
I followed the book manual of the media needed for the filter
