how do 450 fish die in 12 hrs??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
after having worked in a LFS for several years, something like that sounds like someone overdosed on meds on those tanks.

you would be surprised how easily you can wipe a tank of fish out with a strong ich med that contains malachite green or methyl blue if you overdose.

they go down fast. sometimes, you dont even need to OD.

if you use a very strong ich med (like Super Ich Cure - not sure if this one is even still on the market) on a tank of sensitive tetras like wild cardinals or wild rummies they can all die in hours...

I have seen it many times. particularly if its a new batch of imports.

I have wiped out a tank full of turquoise rainbows with a simple dose of organicure..next day, all were down..

it can happen, and surprisingly easily..

I remember that. it was the 800g display tank at Big Al's mississauga.

they used chlorine pucks for pools.

those are the people who should be sterilized.

they should be arrested... for animal cruelty and they could probably also get charged with destruction of property....

just an idea but is your massive system conected to an automatic fill up system? i work at a store and all our sumps have it installed and if somehow those autofillups malfunction it continuously pumps water into the system and that water will without fail change temperatures drastically throughout the night killing off the majority of fish.

this has happened at my store, by the time morning comes temps could be "normal" but actually fluctuated from hot water to cold water being pumped in at night.

My lfs had an arse come in a put bleach in their amazing cichlid display...very sad day.

I had a customer poor motor oil in my pond display once. I was helping 5 people, when he came in and demanded help. He told me he was first and I told him he wasnt and I'd help him when it was his turn. He said he was there before all those people (BS) and I told him I didnt see him. He said, "Oh I see how it is, you can't see this color? Whent on and on about me being racist. I told him there was only one racist here and it wasnt me. He stormed off, came back and killed all my fish.

I've seen this happen twice (not my fault)

i would think fish could survive without filtration for more than 12 hours in a 20 gallon tank. when the powere went out durring hurricane Ike my friend didnt have power for 3 days and only one fish died in his 40 gallon over populated cichlid tank. this doesnt sound right. i would suspect foul play or some kind of revenge. who was the person to lock the store up that night?

I've seen a 75% kill with an overnight power outage.

p.s, I no longer work for a Corp Pet store. 4 years was it for me. You can only go so high in management before you realize the nature of the beast.

I had a breaker go one night and lost a lot of fish. Certain groups of fish did not make it, while others were still okay and managed. The fish that required higher levels of oxygen didn't make it. The angels live in still warm water where oxygen levels are lower than that in cooler faster flowing areas. This makes me suspect there was lack of oxygen from a potential power outage. Any of your clocks go out? Computer restart? Anything that would suggest loss of power?
