How Do I Do This?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You need to start testing nitrite, and nitrate...only then will you know when your tank has fully cycled.

Agreed,Im doing test daily and starting to see some improvement. Thinking another week will do. I'm also thinking of getting a 29 gallon cube for my brother. If I do, how would you guys recommend setting it up? Should I just use the "dead sand" not live?

Yes, dont waste your money on the "live stuff".

Nothing can live without food, and thats exactly what sand in a bag would be doing after a time.

If you want live sand, go to an LFS.

Otherwise just get an aragonite, I recommend Caribsea's Reef-Grade stuff, its nice and fine, yet big enough that you can vacuum it easily.

Just use LR or some food in the bottom to cycle the tank.

How many pounds of liverock would I need?

However much you want to fill your tank out with. General rule of thumb is 1:1 pounds/gallons...but I am against this as it cant lead to very crowded tanks, and dead spots, which actually HURT h2o quality which is what the whole 1:1 rule is trying to eliminate by adding filtration via LR.

Ah got ya got ya. Im thinking about adding a bubble anemone and a clown. My water has finally tested out ok!!!! Done some research and found that although bubble anemones can be hard to keep, they are the easiest of the anemones. Inputs?

Meh...not really. No anemone is really "easy".

Everything should have been stable for awhile before you consider doing this.

Got the R/O unit this afternoon and hooked it all up. Did about 15 gallons worth of water and am going to do a water change tomorrow making my own saltwater and all of that. How much salt should you mix in order to get the salinity correct? Also whats a good brand of salt.
If I do get the anemone, what sort of feeding regiment should I do?

I use instant ocean...I feel that it is a good low price, and it is also sort of the industry standard.

I use 1/2C of IO salt per gallon of h2o for a salinity about 1.024

There should be instructions on your salt though that describe exactly what you should do.

Maybe you are doing this already, but you should be mixing the water at least a day in advance to stabilize(temperature and ph) it before putting it into your tank.

It will say on the package what you need to mix. You will absolutely need a hydrometer to get the specific gravity as close to 1.025 as possible. It should be between 1.021-1.025 for sure.

I use Instant Ocean and have had no problems with it.

Honestly, I would hold off on the anemone a little longer until your tank is more mature and stable as anemones are not easy creatures to keep at all.
