How do I get rid of snails??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a green spotted puffer thats about 2 inches long currently. I wouldn't suggest putting him in a tank with pretty fish, mine ate one of my african cichlids so im sure he could take down an angel, or at least rough him up quite a bit. Have you tried taking the plants out and rinsing them off as well as possible, its just one more step that could help your problem. Its may take some time but if you can rinse off the egg sacks you can at least stunt the population growth. I cant seem to breed enough snails at times to keep my fish happy, of course i dont use them as the primary food, more like a treat. If your not soft hearted or weak stomached you can just crush them with your hands inside the tank, its faster then picking them out. The shells will eventulaly break down. And in a tank that large it shouldnt push your biological filter over the edge.

I remember reading somewhere (probably in the fish diseases section) that some fish medecines has copper and that would harm invertebrates, so may be you can use that to treat your tank and get rid of your snails as side effect? May be some body remember what kind of med it is.

Loaches are sensitive to many medications so you would have to make sure that they would be ok. And as far as i have read you can never totaly get rid of the copper in your tank once you put it in. Inverts are sensitive to copper so you would have to plan ahead.

Maybe you should actually read my first post instead of just the title....Actually they are quite active, but like frozen food better than live...

Wow I cant beleive your loaches dont feast on these snails, but it could be thar they are a type of snail loaches wont eat or it could be they go for the easier food. try cuttng way back on feeding if all you have is Angels and loaches try some freeze dried krill or blood worms the angels will eat all before it can sink. your loaches will then either learn to feed from the surface or start eating the snails.

I have been cutting back on food, but the only problem is my angels are getting mad at me! My loaches will eat out of my hands, so they will come up to the surface for bloodworms or anything else. They are pretty friendly, which is why I think they will not eat the snails! I saw a yoyo loach in at my lsf for $8 and he was about 3 inches long. I thought about buying him and seeing if he would take care of my problem. Would he bother my angels?
