I've recently come across posts on this site and others stating how disgusting the fancy goldfish varieties (i.e. telescope, oranda, bubble eye) are, and that it is cruel to breed them due to the physical "mutations" being for the fishkeepers pleasure while being detrimental to the fish's function and overall health. I think that there is no harm in these varieties as they have existed for many many years and the fish seem to do just fine in the aquarium. Actually, I only really like the moors and telescope eyes-regular goldfish are a bit to plain for me. What I'm getting at here is how do YOU feel about fancy goldfish?
they will make good feeders just like rosies but bigger.nothing wrong with feeding them to my fish lol

I think that point he was trying to make is that fishkeeping itself is a hobby and the breeding of goldfish from carp is the oldest form of fishkeeping. The chinese started breeding red/yellow fish because they represented a precious metal and were the fish possessed by the king himself.

fishkeeping in itself is unnatural.

And so started, ugly deformed fish, and ended their place as natural, north american natives.

they were never native to north america. I believe that the Ulysses S. Grant administration took efforts to spread the carp across america as it is originally a european and asian fish. carp are exotic.

I just never liked the look of the fancy goldfish. I can't see myself ever purchasing one.

Never had a place a north american natives. remeber this section is for all cold water fish including goldfish, na natives, and whatever is kept at sub tropical levels. But yet again, this section get turned into a ill informed pissing match.

Not having a stroke, buddy... I don't let how or what people say on forums ruin my day...just like things to be streamlined like this thread isn't anymore...(Quote Oscar) sounds like if things arent going exactly the way (you) want is when it becomes a Pi#$%ng match, Its not so much ill informed as it is dont really give a Rats ***. But thank you for making it SO much nicer. :) wait whats this Ignore button thingy (*) ....Thats great problem solved :)

GAH Fancy goldfish are FINE. They are as FINE as any other fish or dog or coloured hamsters or cat or guppy. They don't make good feeders as they are high in fats! (especially trans fats, cholestrol, and saturated fat) AND they cost a lot.

I wouldn't have bought any (besides pearlscale, common or ryukin) but my brother liked MOOR. They are decent fish. Only problem I have with em is that they eat plants. I like the look of the ones with normal eyes more though. And I don't like POM POM.

yea this thread definitely did get a little derailed :)haha but it happens in any discussion i guess. ithurtz, awesome fish and nifty tank- definitely pretty slick to make a tank on your own. jim just so you know i dont think breeding a fish that couldnt eat or swim would be a good thing nor do i think the idea of a dog with two legs is an attractive one-although some dogs that have lost two legs (one front, one rear at least) have actually been able to get around business as usual to my understanding. im sure you could find a video on youtube if u wanted to. and thank you by the way for letting everyone now that you sincerely dislike "fugly & deformed" goldfish and apparently the discussion of aforementioned fish.

but thanks everybody for chiming in i just wanted to see where a small portion of the fish keeping community stood on the subject of breeding fancy goldfish for what makes them "fancy"....and god do i hate actually saying the word "fancy"
