I reduced the lighting to come on at 12pm and go off at 8pm. In the morning it gets a little bit of sunlight as my bedroom faces east, is that ok or should I try and reduce it? It never gets direct sunlight though.

should I continue to does excel and comprehensive as I have been?

one more thing, this tank has been set up for almost 1 year.

substrate is flourite and some smaller aquarium gravel.
The hagen fixture IMO is much better than the nova fixture. For the money you get a very good fixture.

First, both come with bulbs. Second Nova is not gasketed to keep water out. Third, Hardware store bulbs are not the proper spectrum. They are labeled as 6500/6700K bulbs, but in reality are usually 4500K.
here's my opinions on them, being that ive used both. id say overall, theyre pretty comparable fixtures

- build quality seems to be the same on both
- Nova has switches for the lights, Hagen doesnt. this is a BIG deal for me
- both use cheap thin aluminum single reflector for both bulbs
- Nova has a fan which is fairly loud, and requires an extra outlet
- Hagen has sealed bulbs, Nova uses a splash shield
- Hagen is a lot more bulkier and taller, Nova has a slim profile
- Hagen has built-in clips for hanging the light, Nova does not
- Nova you can run with one bulb only, Hagen you cannot, it wont fire up. This is pretty important, as Nova gives you more flexibility

i dont think you can go wrong with either fixture. just depends which one you personally like better.

I will start saving up for the hagen fixture 48" with one T5 HO bulb.

What about the other questions about doseing....

here's another option. ive seen these in person and theyre great fixtures for the money. this is what i would get, if it were me :)

better looking, superior reflector to hagen or nova, nice aluminum finish, has a switch, only thing i dont know is if it will turn on with one bulb only

Would this fixture from them be good? http://www.fishneedit.com/t5ho-4ft--2lamp-aquarium-light.html I couldn't find a single bulb fixture.

what are your opinions on this fixture WyldFya??

I could send them an email asking if they will work with only one bulb....
do they have the water resistent endcaps??

How the heck can it only be 90$ with 2 bulbs and they include the bulbs with the order??!!

because youre paying for a name brand, like Hagen. same thing with name brand clothes, luxury cars, etc. there's stuff out there that will do the same for cheaper. tons of people use these fixtures, you wont find much bad stuff to be said. i just checked out a local member's planted tank, he's been running the 4 bulb fixture for a LONG time, never had an issue.

and no on the waterproof end caps, just regular connectors

Hagen also has arm extensions for odd sized tanks, riser legs with adjustable height. The Hagen fixtures do have a switch on their timers that are now included standard with the fixtures.

Is there a sheet of acrylic between the bulbs and the water??
