because youre paying for a name brand, like Hagen. same thing with name brand clothes, luxury cars, etc. there's stuff out there that will do the same for cheaper. tons of people use these fixtures, you wont find much bad stuff to be said. i just checked out a local member's planted tank, he's been running the 4 bulb fixture for a LONG time, never had an issue.
I don't agree with this. A lot of these names got to be big by having quality products. The cost of lights is pretty standard, when you incorporate all of the licensing that goes into making these lights. The cost of a quality bulb is also very standards across the boards. For a 24W ho t5, you are looking at around $20. For 4 bulbs that is $80, so that means they are either taking a big loss of the fixture, or there are things that aren't there. Especially a warranty.

However, if you can find a newer company that has all the things the big names do, then they may just be building up. However, if they have been in business for more than a couple years and their prices have stayed static, then you know there is something missing. Businesses may start out with low prices, but the way they have to run, they will increase price, otherwise, they will not make money, and will die off.

Not so much worried, but would like to get the right fixture that will work well and last.

What exactly will the waterproof endcaps do.
They keep your humidity from frying your electrical connections. There by avoiding the need for acrylic or glass between the light source, and the water. Glass is UV resistant, blocking some light, and both are reflective surfaces that will reflect some light. Finally, both provide a spot for things like mineral deposits, salt creep (in salt tanks), and algae to grow, thus blocking light.

so, in other words. You think that because of the cheap price there may be things that they left out of this said fixture?

So no to the endcaps from Drsfosterandsmith.

Yes, the first I see is a warranty. That is a big one. Also, if it has a switch, in the US it has to have a UL listing, and should specify that, which I could not find.

it's hard to say that when people have been using fishneedit T5HO and metal halide fixtures for a long time, with no problems. do some google searching and see what actual customers have to say.

the general public has this view that something has to be expensive in order to be "good". luckily there are products that prove otherwise. at the end of the day, it's your money. we can only give our opinions. it's up to you to decide what to buy ;)

So with this fixture there is no warranty, no waterproof endcaps, and no UL listing.

With the hagen glow fixture it has waterproof endcaps. Is there a warranty on this fixture and does it give a UL listing?

To answer your dosing question, I would back off on the carbon to twice a week. Cut back on the lighting, I reverse the seasons and do 10 hrs in winter and 8 hrs in the summer only because of the length of daylight. I use 10K/67K combo CP at 3wpg but I agree a good bulb qualtiy is important as spectrum varies and is very important. Hagen makes a good fixture for HO-T5.

I have used many products like this in the past. I'm not saying expensive is the way to go, but be cautious with products of this nature. The lack of a UL listing, and warranty are big things that can't be over looked. No matter how good the company, there always will be something that doesn't work. That is what a warranty is for.
