Same can be asked how does a fish know who to go batsh@t with if he has never seen his own image? For example Betta only go ape***** with another Betta but they don't know how they themselves look like.
Fixed action patterns are triggered by the environment, they do not depend on thought processes.

I think a lot of it is hormones. Studies on people had people sniffing each other's gym clothes and their favorite scent was the person with the best/most compatable immune system. I am sure these people didn't know ahead of time that these people had healthy and strong immune systems and good genes, but hormones released drew them closer.
Also, I don't think most fish care much about their own existence in the eyes of other fish. What you look like, is only important because you are being seen. I think in the wild, fish don't form bonds like they do in captivity and don't really think about other fish as creatures as much. They would mostly see food (smaller fish), imminent danger (large and moving objects including other fish), and buffer (smaller fish that they can hide in to avoid predation).
