Well I'm not sure it's a matter of how big it is but if the palmas palmas can fit it in it's mouth. So I would say probably 4-5" for a syno but I have not had them together so I can't really say 100%. But as long as you don't think it'll fit in the polys mouth then it should be fine.

I've never seen a large palmas palmas, so i dont know. I'm gonna buy 2 at small sizes, and start them out in my 29g, then move them to my big tank when their big enough. Synodontis have some spiney fins, so im thinking that might effect things too.
oh well if they are small then they should be fine especially if they grow out with the synos.
